B 1. OLINGER. BARBED WIRE REEL.
N0. 599,660- Patented Feb 22, 1898.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELEMUEL ISAAC OLINGER, OF UNIONVILLE, MISSOURI.
BARBED-WIRE REEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 599,660, dated February 22, 1898.
Application filed December 28, 1896. Serial No. 617,277. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELEMUEL ISAAC OLIN- GER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Unionville, in the county of Putnam and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Barbed-Wire Reel, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in reels for building and repairing fences, the object of the same being to provide a device that can be readily and conveniently attached to one of the wheels of a farm-wagon and employed for either drawing upon the wire or paying the same out in building a fence.
To the above ends the invention consists in a peculiar construction and arrangement of the parts, as fully described in the following specification and specifically set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved reel. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the reel applied to one of the wheels of a wagon. Fig. 3 is a detail view of a board employed in supporting the reel upon a bar.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A designates a board which is provided centrally with an axial opening of suflicient size to receive the hub of a vehicle or farmwagon, and to this board are rigidly secured converging slats I), connected at their outer ends to a board B, forming one end of the reel, the opposite end of said board having metal strips d, presenting guides. The slats are further connected to each other at an intermediate point by a block E, having centrally a transverse opening through the same on a line with the opening in the board A and with a similar opening in the board B. The parts hereinbefore described are further strengthened by iron rods a, which are passed through the board or end post B, the central block E and end board A projecting beyond said board and having threaded ends, upon which are turned the nuts f, holding in place the clamping-strips c.
In applying the wire the clamping-strips are removed and the board A placed against the side of the wheel, with the hub H of the latter passing through the opening in said board, while the rods or bolts a extend between the spokes to receive the clampingstrips 0, which bear against the inner sides of said spokes, clamping the device upon the wheel by the turning of the nuts f. By this arrangement the forward movement of the vehicle will turn the reel and serve either to Wind the wire thereon or pay it out. The device can be further strengthened by means of blocks, (illustrated in the drawings and designated by the letters D and 0,) which are placed against the inner sides of the boards A and B,respectively, and within the slats of the reel.
In the use of the device for building wire fences where it is desired to draw upon the wire and tighten the same the wagon is moved in the direction to properly turn the reel and wind the wire thereon, the opposite movement of the wagon paying the wire out. I In connection with the device I make provision for supporting the same upon a bar, in which case a board G, having a central opening 6, is clamped between the board A and strips a, forming an opening, through which a rod is passed, a similar opening being formed in the board B.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A reel for the purpose set forth comprising end boards, one of which has a central opening, slats between the boards, bolts or threaded rods projecting beyond the board having the central opening, strips placed upon the threaded rods, and nuts for clamping the strips upon the spokes of the vehicle, as herein shown and described.
2. Areel for the purpose set forth comprising end boards, one of which is provided with a central opening to receive the hub of a vehicle-wheel, slats extending between the boards, bolts or threaded rods strengthening the reel and extending beyond the board having the central opening, clamping strips placed over the threaded ends of the rods, and nuts bearing against the clamping-strips; together with an intermediate brace-block having a central opening, and blocks attached to the inner sides of the end boards, as herein shown and described.
ELEMUEL ISAAC OLINGER.
