IMPnovEMENrm srUMP-BXTRAGTOR.
Be it known that I, 'IRA FLANDE-Ra'of Lafayette, Vanduren' county, State of Michigan, have'invented certain new and nseful improvements in Machines for ExtractingStumps, and for raising heavy Weights; and I do hereby4 declare the following to be affull and enact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings that accompany andf'orma part of 4these specifications,` in which; f
v Figure. I,al perspective view of the machine with stump attached.V
Figure .II shows the manner of Wrapping the stump, and the way of using the grab-linken the chain.
. Figure III, the two grab-links--the one made plane, the othercurved-each having a broad, 'oval opening` at one end, and a narrow neck at the other end. Letters A Af the two bed-pieces of jthe frame-work 'of the machine B a beam at top, running across from side to side; thefigs.' 1, 2, 4, 5, and 45V the uprights that sustain sthe beam B.; G the principal lever, as seen in` the drawings; VD a small lever with which to bring down the short end of the principal lever, Cwhen.'it is desiredto make` fast to the stump; Ethe ,main chain; F a large pin to `sustain the link, h h ,thetwo grab,` links; z' i z' rods withhooks on their ends, and, together Vwith the-bolts, j jjylfasten more ,rmly the bed-pieces, A Af, to the standards, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6; k an ordinary tackle-block. i
The object of my invention is to provide a machinethat has morel facilities for `adapting the leverage to the i resistance to beovercome, and the power that may'beavailable at anytime, as also to afford a more ready way of manipulatingl the chains. I The first I secure by arranging the series of l slats en the top of the short arm of the principalV leverfC, and the longitudinal slat, m, in connection with the link, g, and the pin, F, as seen inl Fig. I'. The latter vI obtain by combining the principal chain, E, the two grab-links, h ILL-the one hanging in the link g, as Aseen in Fig. I, the other'arranged and I xsed, as may be seeninFig. The reason for using the links, h h', instead of hooks is, that the chain, E, needs". to be made of very short links 'in order to wrap the stump well, and with such archain hooks of' any considerable strength couldnot well be used.' A glance at Figs. I and II. will show how readily the slack 4of the chain, E, may be taken up at either end simplyby moving it into the swell of the links, It, drawing it" tight,'and then let it drop into the Vneck or'narrowpart of the link again, whereit will beheld rmiy. -The .manipulations of the other parts of the machine will be apparent from the drawings'. v i n What vI claim as my invention, is A 1. Providing the lever C, with the slot m, and the recesses for the pin, F, in combination with the said pin F, and link g, and lever D, arranged substantially 'as described and for the purposes set forth.
2. I claim the combination of the hooks or bolts, j j j j, (the braces, i z' z' z',with the bed-pieces, A A, tov
.operate as set forth. I
` v IRA FLANDERS.
