Be it known that I, 'IRA FLANDE-Ra'of Lafayette, Vanduren' county, State of Michigan, have'invented certain new and nseful improvements in Machines for ExtractingStumps, and for raising heavy Weights; and I do hereby4 declare the following to be affull and enact description of the same, reference being had to the drawings that accompany andf'orma part of 4these specifications,` in which; f

The object of my invention is to provide a machinethat has morel facilities for `adapting the leverage to the i resistance to beovercome, and the power that may'beavailable at anytime, as also to afford a more ready way of manipulatingl the chains. I The first I secure by arranging the series of l slats en the top of the short arm of the principalV leverfC, and the longitudinal slat, m, in connection with the link, g, and the pin, F, as seen inl Fig. I'. The latter vI obtain by combining the principal chain, E, the two grab-links, h ILL-the one hanging in the link g, as Aseen in Fig. I, the other'arranged and I xsed, as may be seeninFig. The reason for using the links, h h', instead of hooks is, that the chain, E, needs". to be made of very short links 'in order to wrap the stump well, and with such archain hooks of' any considerable strength couldnot well be used.'
