Description

`@uiten gisten @anni @fitta IMPROVEMENT IN PUMPS.
WILLIAM P. SQUIRE, 0F PARIS, ILLINOIS.
Laws Para No. 59,869, dans November 20,1866.
. SPECIFICATION'.
T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
.l Be it known that I, WILLIAM I. SQUIRE, of Paris, Edgar county, and State of Illinois, have'invented a new and useful improvement in Pumps g". and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this' specification: i
This invention consists in a novel construction of a pump, whereby many advantages are obtained, as will be obvious from the following detail description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying plate of draw-v ings, in which the A o Figure is a central vertical section of the pump-cylinder, showing its valve-box in vertical elevation, aswell i as the connecting parts for operating the pump. Y A, in the drawing, represents the cylinder of the pump, in which are arranged two valve-boxes, B B2, one i above the other, with the upper one, B, Jfixed in position, but with the lower, B2, free to be moved up'and down within the cylinder, A, both valves, c, ,of the said boxes opening upward. Y To the lower end of the lower valvebox, Bz, a rod, D, is hung or pivoted that at its lower 'end is hung to a transverse horizontal lever, E, at the lower end of the pump-cylinder and extending across and through vertical slots, F, ofthe same. This lever, E, is hung at one end upon afulcrum pin of the arm Gr, upon the outside of the pump-cylinder, and at lits other end is connected through a vertical rod, II, extcndingupward upon the outside of the cylinder, A, to the shorter arm, I, of the pump-handle or lever, J, hung in suitable stanchions or uprights, K, of the cylinder, A, upon its upper end, so that if such pump-handle be alternately raised and lowered, the lower or movable valve-box, B2, of the pump will consequently be made to move or play up and down within the pump-cylinder, A, as is obvious', thereby liftingvwhatever water may be contained in the cylinder, A, above it and driving it'before it, forcing it through the upper and stationary valve-box, B2, when the lower valve-box, B, then descending by the upward movemcntlof the pump-handle, the water below such valve-box vconsequently rushing' through its valve and lling, or partially so, the space between it and the upper lvalve-box; such water, as the pump-handle is again depressed, is also forced up through the upper valve-box, and so on'as long asthe pump-handle is worked, as is apparent without any further explanation.
Among the many advantages. secured by my improvements may be here mentioned as the most important, that, first, it is not necessary that the pump-cylinder should be made air tight, as the water is forced up in lieu of being lifted as heretofore; second, that the pump cannot freeze, as all the water in its cylinder can beruny off, it not requiring to be charged in order to start it; third, that the water can be Velevated to any height above the surface of the ground and yet the power applied to the pump at the ground surface; and, fourth, it will work equally well whether in a horizontal or perpendicular position, and is adapted for use on railroads and in the water-works of cities and other places. Y I am aware that pumps have been heretofore constructed in which two valves are employed, one of which, (the lower valve,) being movable, and the other, or upper valve, stationary.
I am also aware that the lower valve above alluded to has been operate-d in a manner analogous to my inven tion, but in the pumps referred to the direction of the ilow of the water is tortuous, and two or more chambers 'are required, which. involves great expense, whilst in my invention the course of the water is direct, and no auxiliary chamber o chambers are employed, thereby rendering the force necessary to raise the water .in the pump-stock less, and rendering the construction of the pump cheaper, as no chamber is used save that made in the ordinary pump-stock. f v
I claim' as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-*- The combination of the pump-cylinder A, with its xedupper and lower movable valve-boxes B B2, when the latter is connected through a suitable connecting rod, H, and other parts, with the pump-handle J, or its equivalent, and when the flow of water is direct, substantially as and for the purpose described.
