THOMAS ILfMclllilLL,` OF LYNGHBURG, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF v AND WILLIAM D. MILLER, OF THE SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 59,853, elated November 20, 186.6.
SPECIFICATION.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY OONCERN:
Be it known that I,'THOMAS E. McNEILL,of Lynchburg, in the county of Campbell, and State of Virginia, 'have invented a new and improved 'Cotton Press and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification The nature of my invention has for its object the pressing of cotton into bales, and is worked by hydraulic pressure, and consists in making two hydraulic presses and working them in conjunctiolrwith eachother, or separately, as may be desired,
Various kinds of hydraulic presses have been constructed and used at an enormous expense. By'reason of their complication and liability of breaking and getting out of order, serions objections have been urged against them. The simplicity andiutility of my invention overcome these'objections.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. i l
The figure represents a front elevation ofmy improved cotton press. Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in the figures.l
A represents the foundation on which stands my improved press.
B is a boiler of common construction, and stands in a vertical position, to which is attached asma-ll vertical steam engine, C, which-receives its steam which is generated in the boiler B.
D is the piston of the engine, which is connected to the lever E, which has a bearing at F made'upon the standard post G, which is secured to the reservoir or pump H. Y
I is a pipe that leads into the cylinder J, which is connected to the press K by the piston L. The said pump, K, is guided in the posts M M. i Y
N is a pipe leading from the cylinder to the cylinder O, which is secured and stands upon the foundation Pf i This cylinder, O, is provided with a piston, which isy attached to the press Q, which works up and down upon the rods R R R. R, two of which arenot shown in the drawings.
S is the top ofthe press secured to the said posts R. These heads of this press are provided with grooves in which to' lay the ropes or bands While'the cotton is undergoing the action of the press, and so arranged that the bales may be bound while the action of the press is going on. I
T is a pipe leadingtfrom the pumps H to and connects with the pipe N.
m, U 't are valves placed in the pipes N and T, and so placed that a continuous stream of water is forced into the cylinder O.
"l 4V is astop-cock located in the pipe Ifor the purpose of cutting oif the water and preventing it from entering thel cylinder J.
Having thus described vmy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The cylinder J, pipes I and N in combination with the cylinder O, for the purposes and substantiallyT as herein shown. v
2.v I claim cylinder J, piston L, in combination With the press or follower K, substantially as described.
3. I claim a hydraulic press provided with or constructed with two cylinders, so as to operate or act in conjunction With each other, or separately, when constructed and operated for the purposes and substantially as described. l
. THOMAS E. McNEILL.
