PATENT Orrrcs.
THOMAS ABRAHAM BAYLISS, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
RAIL-JOINT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 598,070, dated February 1, 1898.
' Application filed S t b 15, 1896. Serial No- 6 05,885. (N0 model.)
To aIZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS ABRAHAM BAY- LISS, manufacturer, a snbjectof the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Thirlmere, W'heeleys Road, Ed gbaston, Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, England, have invented an improved rail-joint for railways, tramways, and for such like connections,-also applicable for building construction of all kinds and for other purposes, of which the follow ing is a specification.
My invention relates to rail-j oints by which the ordinary fish-plates and bolts are dispensed with, the joint being formed entirely without the use of bolts, screws, or like devices.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side View of a rail with the joint-block in place. Fig. 2 is a top view of the joint-block with the parts separated. Fig. 3 is a similar view to Fig. 2 with the parts connected. Fig. 4 is an end View of the parts of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side view of the main portion of the joint-block, and Fig. 6 is a side view of the removable part of said block.
The rail A maybe of any ordinary form, with the exception that at the meeting end each rail has a kerf or notch 1 in its web, these notches alining with each other and forming a space into which projects the web portion D of the plate D, forming one side of the joint-block. This plate is longer than the web portion D and wider, so that its up per and lower edges may find support against the flanges of the rail. On the opposite side of the rail the joint-block is completed by a removable plate D having a dovetail groove D in its inner side adapted to slide upon a dovetail rib or projection D on the web portion D. The plate D is substantially like the plate D in extent, and the upper and lower edges thereof find bearingsagainst the flange portion of the rails, and from this construction it will be seen that the joint-block makes a solid and firm connection between the rails at their meeting ends, bridging the joint and resisting all movement of the rail ends vertically. The dovetail groove D in the face of the plate D does not extend from end to end of the said plate, but ends at a point D where the stop-shoulder is left to limit the position of theremovable plate.
I claim as my invention- A rail-joint comprising the rails having the slotted end and a joint-block having a plate D on one side, a web D extending therefrom and adapted to pass through the slots and a removable plate D the said removable plate and web being connected by a tongue and groove which groove extends along the face of the plate and ends at a stop-shoulder D substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
