COMBINATION GAS AND ELECTRIC-LIGHT FIXTURE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,214, dated January 11, 1898.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. PARKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combination Gas and Electric-Light Fixture, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an improved con struction of a combination gas and electriclight fixture, whereby repairs can be made without necesitating cutting of wires or the employment of skilled labor, the novel features being hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of a combination gas and electric-light fixture embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a plan View of Fig. 1 with the plug for the gas and the upper portion of the fixture re moved. Fig; 3 represents a plan view of the plug through which the gas passes, (seen in Fig. 1 and its adjuncts,) said plug being removed and inverted from the position seen in Fig. 1. Figs. 4 and 5 represent perspective views of contact devices to be hereinafter referred to.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a gas-inlet pipe, the same communicating with the passage B in the body portion 0, said passage being controlled by the cock D, as is customary, and leading into the passage E, located in the plug F, which latter is held in position by means of the cap or other fastening device G.
The port or passage E forms the communication between the passage B and the passage H in the tubing J, the latter being provided with the adjacent passage, K, in which the conductors hereinafter referred to are located, it being of course understood that the passage H leads to a suitable burner or gastip, while the conductors in the passage K lead to a suitable electric-lighting or other device, such as an incandescent lamp, &c.
L designates a passage located adjacent the plug F, in which the electrical conductors are located, one of said conductors being indicated at M and passing through the chamber N and having connected thereto the upward extension P, which connects with the ring or annulus Q, which is contained within the wall Q, said ring being separated therefrom by the insulation R.
S designates suitable insulation which sur rounds the plug F and has contained therewithin the contact devices T, the latter having a resilient portion or member T, which contacts with the fixed ring Q, while the member U of said device is embedded in said insulation S and has the wire or other conductor V communicating therewith, said conductor having the upward extension WV, which leads through the chamber or passage L into the passage K and thence to the electric light. The other conductor X (seen at the right of Fig. 1 and in Fig. 2) after passing through the passage N passes upwardly, as indicated in Fig. 1, through the insulation X and is connected with the member Y of the contact device Y, said member Y being embedded in said insulation X, the current passing through the member Y to the resilient member Z, and thence to the plate, ring, or contact device A, which is located on the lower portion of the insulation S, the current being conducted from said ring A through the conductor B to the desired point, said conductor B being located in the recesses L and the passage K.
The cock D is held in position in any suitable manner by the cap 0, and the recess L can be closed in any suitable manner, as by the plug E.
The operation is as follows: The current is conducted through the conductor M into the upright member P and thence to the ring or annulus Q. The current passes from the ring Q to the member T of the contact device seen in Fig. 5, thence through the member U to the conductor V and, leaving the latter, through the conductor W to the desired point, the current returning through the wire B to the ring A and being taken from the latter by the member Z of the contact device Y, the current passing thence to the member Y and afterward through the conductor X back again, thus completing the circuit. The parts as seen in Fig. 1 are in normal or operative position, and when it is desired to disconnect the same for the purpose of making repairs or any other reasons it is only necessary to remove the cap G, after which the plug F, insulation S, and contact device T, consisting of the members T and U and the ring A, are removed, it being of course understood that the ring Q, the conductors X and I, and the contact device Y, consisting of the members Y and Z, remain fixed and immovable, as does also the insulation X.
It will thus be seen that by my invention I am enabled to readily disconnect electric conductors without necessitating cutting of any of the wires or other connections or the employment of skilled labor.
It will of course be understood that various changes may be made by those skilled in the art which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not therefore desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction I have herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a combination gas and electric-light fixture having a body port-ion O, with a passage B therein, a controlling-cock O, the plug F in said body portion, the tubing J having the adjacent passages II and K, the said passage II communicating with a passage in said plug leading from said passage B, said body portion having a chamber therein, the ring Q in said chamber, separated from the wall thereof by the insulation R, an insulated contact device having a member adapted to contact with said ring Q, and an electric conductor passing through said chamber and through a passageL adjacent said plug and having connected thereto the upward extension I connecting with said ring.
2. In a combination gas and electriclight fixture, the body portion 0 with a gas-passage B therein and provided with a chamber and passage L, the plug F with passage E therein, the tubing J having the adjacent passages H and K therein, the insulated ring Q in said chamber, the insulations S and X surrounding said plug, the contact devices T and Y within said insulations S and X respectively, said devices T having a resilient member contacting with said ring and provided with another member embedded in said insulation S, the conductor V communicating with said embedded member and a conductor having the upward extension IV leading to said passage L and to said passage K in the tubing, the conductor X passing through the said insulation X, and connected with the member Y of the contact devices Y, a ring communicating with a resilient member of said contact device Y, and the conductor 13 communicating with said ring and passing through said passage L into said passage K of the tubing.
3. In a combination gas and electric-light fixture, a body portion having a chamber and an inlet-passage, a plug in said chamber and having a bore communicating with said pas sage and provided with a passage for conductors, insulated conducting-rings in said chamber and two resilient contact devices in said chamber suitably insulated and adapted to contact with said rings.
4. In a combination gas and electric-light fixture, a body portion provided with insulation X and the walls Q, a contact device Y having the member Y embedded in said insulation and a resilient member Z projecting therefrom, a conductor X leading from said member Y, an apertured plug 1* having insulation and adapted to contact with said member Z, the contact device T carried by said ring S, the latter having the member U embedded therein, said member having the resilient portion T, a stationary ring Q supported within the walls Q, said stationary member being adapted to contact with the resilient portion T, conductors V and I leading from said member U and a conductor B leading from said ring A.
5. In a combination gas and electric-light fixture, a body portion with a passage therein and a chamber, a plug in said body portion provided with a bore communicating with said passage, and having a passage for electric conductors,insulated rings in said chamber, contact devioes,each having a member suitably insulated and a resilient member each of the latter being adapted to contact with one of said rings, conductors c011- nected with said contact devices and leading from said plug through said passage therein.
