WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Yatent No. 597,081, dated January 1 1, 1898.
Application filed May '7, 1897, erial No. 635,575. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, ANDREW HULLINGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jewett, in the county of Harrison and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Wrench, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in wrenches.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of ratchet-wrenches and to provide a simple and inexpensive one adapted to be readily reversed to enable a nut to be screwed on or ofi. a bolt and capable of convenientadj ustnient to adapt the clamping bars or jaws to the size of the nut or part to be gripped.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a ratchet-wrench constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar View taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. lis a detail perspective view of the clampingjaws and the adjusting -screws, showing the gearing for connecting the latter.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
1 designates a shank or stock constituting a handle and provided at one end with a circular head or ring 2, receiving a rotary hub or casing 3, which carries a pair of adjustable clamping bars or jaws 1-. The rotary hub or casing which forms a housing for the jaws or clamping-bars and the means for adjusting the same is composed of two sections 5 and 6, and the section 6 is provided with an annular series of ratchet-teeth 7, forming a ratchet wheel and adapted to be engaged by a pair of oppositelyextending spring-actuated pawls or dogs 8, mounted on the'handle or stock adjacent to the circular head or ring and adapted to engage the ratchet-wheel alternately, whereby the casing or hub may be rotated in either direction to screw or unscrew a nut. The sections of the casing or hub are detachabl'y connectedby screws 9 or other suitable fastening devices, which enable the clamping bars and the adjusting devices to be readily inspected.
The oppositelyextending dogs or pawls S are held in engagement with the ratchetwheel by their springs, and one or the other is maintained out of engagement by a cam 10, journaled in a recess of the handle or stock and provided with an exterior handle 11, which enables the 0am to force either of the dogs or pawls back from the ratchet-wheel and permit the other to spring into engagement with the same. The recess which receives the pawls and the cam is covered by a suitable face-plate 12, which is provided with an opening to receive one end or journal of the cam, which is disposed between the pawls or dogs.
The sections of the casing are provided at opposite sides of the wrench with openings 13 and are recessed at their inner faces to receive the clamping bars or jaws 4, which are mounted on parallel adjusting screws 14, journaled in suit-able bearings of the casing or hub at the ends of the recesses of the sections and provided with right and left hand threaded portions, which engage correspondingly-threaded openings of the ends of the clamping bars or jaws at.
The adjusting-screws have keyed to them sprocket-pinions 15, which are connected by a sprocket-chain 16, and one of the adjustin g-screws is provided with a flattened extension 17, terminating short of the periphery of the rotary casing or hub.
The adj ustin g-screw which is provided with the extension 17 is adapted to be engaged by a longitudinally-movable shaft or stem 18, mounted in a bore or opening of the stock or handle and adapted to engage the said adjusting-screw when the parts are properly positioned, the casing being designed to be provided with a suitable index-mark 19 to facilitate the arrangement of the flattened eX- tension 17 opposite the shaft or stem 18.
The shaft or stem 18 is provided at its inner end with a grooved head 21, adapted to receive and interlock with the extension 17 of the adjusting-screw, whereby when the shaft or stem is rotated the adjusting-screws will be simultaneously operated an d will move the clamping bars or jaws to and from each other, according to the direction of rotation of the shaft or stem. The outer end of the shaft or stem is squared and is provided with a threaded portion and receives a sectional The inner section of the knob is knob 22. provided with a rectangular opening and is arranged on the squared portion of the shaft or spindle, and the outer sectionis provided with a threaded opening and serves as a nut to engage thethreaded portion of the shaft 1 to enable a nut to be rotated in either direction, andthat it may be operated in small spaces where an ordinary wrench would be practically inoperative.
What I claim is 1. In a wrench, the combination of a stock provided with a head, a rotary casing journaled in the head and having an opening to receive a nut, a pair of clamping-bars mount- :ed in the casing at the opening and adapted to engage a nut, saidrclamping-bars being provided at theirendswith threaded openings, adjusting-screws journaled in the casing and provided with rightand left hand threaded portions engaging the threaded openings of the clamping-bars, gearing connecting the adjusting-screws, and K163411511)? operating the latter, substantially as de-i scribed. V l v 2. In a Wrench, the combinationof a'stock provided with a head, a casing mounted in the head and capable of rotation, a pair of clampin g-bars arranged Withinthe casing and provided with threaded openings, adjustingscrews journaled in the casing and having right and left hand threaded portions engaging the threaded openings of the clampingbar, gearing connecting the adjusting-screws, and a longitudinally-movable shaft mounted on the stock and arranged to interlock with one of the adjusting-screws when the same is 7 brought oppositeit, substantially as and for r r 'the purpose described.
3. In a wrench, the combination of a stock having a head, a rotary casing mounted on the latter, a pair of clamping-bars arranged within the casing, adjusting-screws having right and left hand threaded portions engagring the clamping-bars, one of the adjustingscrews being provided with an extension,
gearing connecting the adjnsting-screws, a longitudinally-inovable shaft mounted on the stock and providedat one end with a grooved head to receive and interlock with the extension of the adjusting-screw, and a knob or handle arranged at the otherend of the shaft,
substantially as described.
teeth, pawl-s mounted on the stock and adapted to engage the ratchet-whecl alternately, clamping-bars arranged within the casing,
adj listing-screws engaging the clamping-bars and journaledi'n the casing, sprocketpini0ns mounted on the screws, a sprocket-chani arranged on the pinions and. connecting the screws, and a shaft mounted on the stock and I adapted to interlock with one of the screws when the sameis brought opposite it, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I havehereto affix-ed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW HULLINGER.
Witnesses HAYS SHUGERT, JAMES AIKEN.
, 4. In a wrench, the combination of a stock, r I a rotary casing mounted on the stock and composed of two separable sections, one of the sections vbeing provided with ratchet--
