To all whom t may concern:

Beit known that I, GEORGE S. GUY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Petersburg, inthe county of Dinwiddie and State oi' Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Umbrella Name-andAddress Tags, of which the following is a specification.

The chief object of the present invention is to provide a novel, simple, efficient, economical, and easily-operated name-and-address tag particularly designed lfor attachment to the rib of an umbrella, but susceptible of general application or attachment to any article or object whichit is desired to identifyby providing the saine with the name or name and address of the owner.

To accomplish this object my inven tion consists in the features of construction and in the eombin ation or arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference be ing made to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved name-and-address tag, the scale being about the full size of the device as actually manufactured. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view, on a larger scale, of the longitudinallyslotted cylinder or tube. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective vienT of the rotary pin or rod having a finger-piece at one end carrying a device by which the tag can be attached to an umbrella-rib or other article. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the flexible name or address sheet. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional vieW showing the parts in position and Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view, on a larger scale, of the parts shown in Fig. 1.

In order to enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now describe the saine in detail,referring to the d rawings, wherein- The numeral l indicates a hollow cylinder or tube having a continuous slot 2 extending approximately the full length thereof. This cylinder or tube is provided at its ends with inserted heads or plugs 3, having central bores or orifices d, designed for the passage of the rotary pin or rod 5 in such manner that when the pin or rodl is supported in position it can he readily rotated in either direction through the medium of a finger-piece' 6, rigidly secured to one end of the pin or rod. The

finger-piece G is preferably in the form of a disk having a milled or roughened periphery, but it may be of-any construction suitable to be manipulated by the lingers. The iiexible name-and-address sheet 7 is of a width approximately coincident with the length of the longitudinal slot 2 and is preferably of parchment, which can be Written upon with pen and ink; but this sheet may be of any ilexible fabric suitable for the purpose in handthat is, a fabric which can be Wound upon and unwound from the pin or rod 5 and be provided in any suitable manner with the name or name and address of the owner of the umbrella, article, or object which is to be pro vided with the improved name-and-address tag. The exible sheet is secured. at one end to the pin or rod 5 and is adapted to move back and forth through the longitudinal slot 2. The outer end of the flexible sheet is provided With a bead orrib 8, which protects the edge of the sheet and also prevents the latter from being drawn entirely into the cylinder or tube when the pin or rod is turned in the direction to Wind up the sheet. I prefer to connect the inner end of the flexible sheet with the pin or rod by constructing the latter in the form of a slender tube having a longitudinal slot 9, into which the inner end of the lexible sheet can be insert-ed and secured by pressing the edges of the slot upon the sheet. I do not, however, limit myself to this particular means of securing the inner end of the ilexible sheet to the pin or rod.

The improved device is designed to be secured to the rib of an umbrella or to any other article or object which is to be supplied with the name or name and address of the owner. To accomplish this purpose, I provide the device With two clips 10, extending around opposite ends of the cylinder l and each c0mposed of two arms or members 12, shaped to embrace the umbrella-rib 13 or any other article or object and having their extremities extended to form short Shanks 14, which are screw-threaded and can be pressed together for the reception of a screw-nut 15 for the purpose of holding the arms or members 12 clamped upon the umbrella-rib 13 or other object. The clips 10 may be separate pieces brazed or otherwise secured to the cylinder, and they are placed upon the latter at the ends IOO ,the particular clips illustrated in the drawings, as any suitable form of clip may be used, and it may be connected with the cylinder or tube other than as represented in the drawings.

The device can be very economically manufactured and placed on the market at a comparatively small cost, in that the cylinder or tube is readily made of sheet-brass or other metal, the end heads or plugs are easily inserted and secured, and the pin or rod can be made by simply turning a strip of metal into the form of a tube, thus enabling the flexible sheet to be connected therewith in a very simple manner.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A name-tag for an umbrella, or other object, consisting of a hollow cylinder having a longitudinal slot which extends to and opens at one end thereof, heads fitted into the cylinder, a rotary pin journaled in the heads and having at one end an attached finger-piece, by

which it can be rotated in either direction, a flexible name-sheet secured at one end to the pin and provided at its opposite end with a bead, and two clips rigidly secured, respectively, to the ends of the cylinder and each having screw-threaded Shanks, and nuts engaging said Shanks to connect them and retain the cylinder on the umbrella-rib, or other object, one of said clamps serving to close the open end of the longitudinal slot at one end of the cylinder, substantially as described.

2. A name-and-address tag for an umbrella, or other object, 'consisting of a cylinder constructed with a longitudinal slot, heads fitted in the ends of the slotted cylinder, a rotary pin journaled in said heads, a flexible namesheet secured at one end to the pin and extending through the longitudinal slot in the cylinder, a finger-piece for turning the pin, or rod, and two clips encircling and secured to the opposite ends of the cylinder, and each composed of two arms having their extremities extended into screw-threaded Shanks, and a nut for engaging said shanks to clamp the said cli ps upon the rib of an umbrella, or other object, substantially as described.
