MILITARY SHELTER-TENT AND CLOTHING-ROLL CQMBINED.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,767, dated January 4, 1898.
Application filed November 13, 1897. Serial No. 658,361! (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Beitknown that I, CHARLES W. VVILLIAMS, major United States Army, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Military Shelter-Tent and Glothing-Roll Cornbined, of which the following is a specification; and I hereby state that the invention described herein when patented may be used by the Government or any of its oificers or eniployees in the prosecution of the work for the Government or by any person in the United States without the payment of any royalty thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in military shelter-tents and clothing-rolls combined; and the object of this invention is to provide means upon the common form of shelter-tent now in use in the United States Army by which straps can be attached at either side of said shelter-tent. These tents are composed of half-tents, and each of such halftents is adapted to be carried by a soldier. hen the half-tent is rolled, the straps must be on the outside and the blankets and other articlesmust be in contact with the inside thereof. These tents are constructed with triangular flaps at one end to form a closure in the completed tent, an opposite edge to engage another half-tent, and a strap edge to engage a third half-tent to form the top. If the straps are permanently attached to one side only, the half-tents all being uniform, when the completed tent is pitched the straps of one half must come inside and those of the other half outside to cause the triangular flaps and edges to join as above stated. This would necessitate the exposure of different sides of the half-tents to the weather, and hence when rolled the placing of the exposed and generally moist side of one half-tent out of every two in'contact with the blankets and other articles. taching four or more gromets or eyelets adjacent to that edge of the half-tent which is encloth at each gromet, it is obvious that a strap can be passed under the said rib from either This defect I avoid by atside of the tent and be held in its proper position ready for use when the tent is rolled, so that a dry side can always be in contact with the contents of the roll.
In the drawings forming a part of this ap plication similar reference-letters designate similar parts throughout the several Views.
Figure I illustrates a standard half -tent provided with my improved gromets and eyelets. Fig. II shows an eyelet. Fig. III is a View of a portion of the tent with a strap passing through the eyelet. Fig. IV shows the half-tent rolled and placed on a soldier as in actual practice.
H is the half-tent, provided with the buttons A and buttonholes B, by which the halves are attached when the tent is pitched. At the corners and middle of the bottom are holes I, provided with eyelets for ropes. While I have called these parts half-tents, they are not necessarily so, as it is generally the custoln to attach four of them together, thus making each part a quarter and pot a half tent. In. order to enable this to be done, buttons and buttonholes are placed at the end opposite to the triangular flap.
This tent, as above described, is in all respects similar to the standard shelter-tent issued to the United States army and forms no part of my invention.
At the edge of the tent are elongated perforations J. Four are shown, though more or less may be used, as is considered desirable. Secured to the edges of these openings by means of threads, as clearly shown in Fig. III, is the gromet or eyelet C, provided with outside bars D and F, and parallel to these and in the same plane is the bar E.
K is a strap, which is preferably made of the same material as the tent, passed through the eyelet, over the bars D and F, and under the bar E. (See Fig. III.) It is obvious that this strap may be placed on either side of the tent. At one end of this strap is the ordinary clamp-buckle L, and the strap is made long enough to reach around the tent when rolled and be engaged by the buckle. It is necessary to remove the strap when it is to be changed from one-side of the half-tent to the other; but otherwise it need not be disturbed.
The operation is as follows: The four halttents which usually come together to form a completed tent are habitually carried with their straps rove through the eyelet in such a Way that theywill all come outside the tent proper, and if anychange inlthe fours should take place the straps are correspondingly changed before the tent is pitched. When the tent is struck, each half-tent having its strap already on the outside is rolled and the straps properly fastened, the strap at the end passing around both rolls, as shown in Fig. IV.
My invention enables all tents to be of identical make, to be provided with straps, and at the same time permits the insideof the pitched tent to contact with the contents of the roll, a result heretofore unattained.
Having thus described the structure and use of my invention, What I desire to cover by Letters Patent is set forth in the annexed claims:
1. A half-tent provided with tongued eyelets adjacent to one edge, in combination with straps adapted to pass between the tongues and sides of the said eyelets on either side of the said tent to enable the said tent to be rolled with its Weather side out after having been joined with either half-tents of uniform make, to constitute a complete tent, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a plurality of half- 0
