A. J. WALLER.
SACK TIE.
No. 596,642. Patented Jan. 4, 1898.
WITNESSES INVENTOR \jzzarmaaxmlzeg Atlormy NITED STATES ALEXANDER J. WALLER,
OF DASSEL, MINNESOTA.
SACK TIE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,642, dated January 4, 1898. Application filed February 24:, 1897. $erial ITm 624,758. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER J. WALLER, of Dassel, in the county of Meeker and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sack-Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in clips or fasteners for securing the open end of a bag or sack, the objectof the same being to provide such a device that will be cheap and simple in construction and when applied to the gathered end of the bag or sack will effectively hold the same closed.
With the above ends in View my invention consists in forming a bag-fastener of wire comprising two sections or members hinged to each other, presenting curved portions that embrace the end of the bag or sack, said members or sections being held in such engagement by one engaging a hook on the other.
The invention further consists in the particular manner of forming the bag-fastener of wire, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a View showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fastener. Fig. 3 isa perspective view showing the modification of the invention.
As heretofore stated, my improved bag-fastener consists of two parts which are hinged to each other, said parts being formed of wire bent into peculiar form to provide a. body portion and a lever hinged thereto. 7
The wire of which the body portion of the fastener is formed is first bent upon itself or looped centrally to presenta cross-bar 1, from which the members 2 2 extend parallel and are curved in the segment of a circle, from which they are bent outwardly and upwardly, as shown, one of said members being formed into the hook 3, while the other is connected to thelower part of said hook. The said members 2 2 are braced to each other adjoining the cross-bar 1 by means of a link or cross bar 4:, the cross-bar 1 forming a fulcrum for the lever or other section of the device, hereinafter described.
5 designates the lever, which is made up from a length of wire bent upon itself to increase the rigidity of the same, and an intermediate portion of this lever is coiled upon the cross-bar 1 of the other member, from which one part of said lever extends to form a handle a, while the other part is curved to provide a curved portion 19, which acts in conjunction with the curved portion of the other member to clamp the endof the bag between the same.
In applying the fastener constructed in accordance with my invention the lever is thrown back and the end of the bag is gathered into the curved portion mentioned, af ter which the lever is operated to cause the curved member 1) thereof to clamp the end of the bag, after which the handle portion of said lever is brought into engagement with the hook 3.
It will be understood that the wire from which the device is made has a spring tendency which permits the operating-lever to be sprung into engagement with the hook and thereby hold the fastener securely upon the bag.
In the modification I have shown the lever constructed of a stouter piece of wire, and in this case the point forming the fulcrum is flattened and provided with a transverse opening to receive the cross-bar 1, the body portion of the device being passed through this opening before it is bent into shape. By providing the cross-bar 4 the members 2 2 are prevented from separating when the device is being applied.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I provide a very simple fastener for bags and one that when placed in engagement with the bag will securely hold the open end thereof together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A fastening for securing the open end of a bag, or for analogous purposes, comprising a body formed into a curved portion and projecting hook, and a lever fulcrumed to the body opposite the hook and formed with a curved portion at one end and a handle at the other end; the handle being adapted to engage the hook when the curved portion is brought adjoining the curved portion of the body, substantially as shown and described.
2. A fastening comprising two sections which are made up of wire, the wire forming one of the sections being bent upon itself to form a cross-bar from which the said members are curved and connected to each other at their ends, one of said members being extended to form a hook, the second member of the device presenting a lever which is fuloruined upon the cross-bar and is curved at one end While the other end provides a handle which engages the hook, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALEXANDER J. VALLER.
