0. W. LEAVENS. FLOOR SET.
No. 596,602. Patented Jan. 4,1898.
I 6 a/ i W/TNESSES I INVENTOR NITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
CHARLESWILLIAM LEAVENS, OF CEDAR BAYOU, TEXAS.
FLOOR-SET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,602, dated January 4, 1898.
Application filed April 21, 1897.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES \VILLIAM LEAvENs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Bayou, in the county of Chambers and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Floor- Sets; and I'do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same;
My invention relates to fioor sets or clamps, and is designed for use in laying floors or putting up sidings and ceilings.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my invention in operative position for clamping. flooring. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is a detail view.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A denotes the bed-plate, rockered at its rear end and provided with obliquelyset spurs a a, mounted therein, provided with beveled heads resting in sockets.
B denotes an upright frame rigidly secured to the middle of said bed-plate and extending lengthwise thereof and provided with standards b and b and a spring b C denotes a lever having bifurcated curvi-' linear ends 0, which embrace the standard I), and are pivoted thereto, the lower rounded ends bearing against the rounded rear ends of the push-bar hereinafter described. 0 denotes a trigger attached to said lever.
D denotes a pawl having bifurcated arms which embrace the standard I) and are pivoted thereto. Said pawl is actuated by the spring 19 E denotes the push-bar havingabifurcated head terminating in spreading arms e, upon the outer sides of which are mounted adjustable clamps F, provided with vertical slots f.
f denotes pins having threaded ends and provided with jam-nuts f*.
The push-bar is divided or slotted from its head rearwardly and embraces the upright frame B. Said bar rides back and forth upon the bed-plate and is held in correct alinement by the upright frame. The upper portion of said bar, as shown in the drawings,
is provided with teeth 6 upon each side of Serial No. 633,092. (No model.)
which engage the spring-actuated doubletoothed pawl D.
G denotes a guard or rest attached by its head or ofiset g to the left side of the bedplate and projects below and outwardly from the same, extending outwardly beyond and below the head and slightly to the right of its left arm.
F denotes a coiled spring attached by one end to the head of the guard and at the other to the head of the push-bar.
In laying flooring the floor-set is placed upon the joist, the bed-plate resting upon the top of the joist, the guard bearing upon the left side and projecting forwardly under the flooring to'be clamped, as shown in Fig. 1. The spurs may then be partly driven in the joist by raising the handle end of the lever C until its rounded end 0 strikes upon the heads of said spurs. The clamps F are then adjusted on top of the flooring. As the handle end of the lever is pressed down its bifurcated ends bear upon the curvilinear rear ends of the push-bar, driving it forward and forcing the head of said bar against the flooring. The pawl D engaging the teeth of the pushbar holds it in position. To release the p ushbar, the handle end of the lever is raised until the trigger c strikes the outer end of the pawl and disengages its lower end from the teeth of the push-bar. The coil-spring will then draw the push-bar back to its original position.
It is evident the clamps F F are adapted for flooring of Varying thicknesses and form, together with the outer end of the guard, suitable jaws which embrace and hold the flooring from above and below. Said clamps are detachable from the arms 6, and when a ceiling is to be put on said clamps give place to the elongated clamps F, (shown in Fig. 3,) which are of the same length as the guard G.
Having shown and described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 1. In a floor-set the combination of the di- ICC) mounted to said frame and adapted to bear Io upon said spurs. v
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES WILLIAM LEAVENS.
Witnesses J. A. FITZGERALD, E. W. BARBER.
