1' mama vzrzns coy. mom-uruou wAsHms'mn n c UNITED v STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NILS P. LINDAHL, OF NAUGATUCK, CONNECTICUT.
BABY-CHAIR.
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,425,dated December 28, 1897.
I Application filed May 25,1897. Serial No. 638,093. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NILs P. LINDAHL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Naugatuck, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby-Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to stools or chairs for use by children when learning to walk, and has for its object to provide a stool which may be opened to admit the child without the necessity of raising the child and placing its feet through the stool-opening.
To this end my invention consists in certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and set forth in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a stool constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the stool-top.
Referring to the drawings, the letters A B designate the two flat sections of the stooltop, which are connected by a hinge C, so that they may be swung outward from each other. The abutting edge of each section has a semicircular opening ol d at the center, the two forming a circular opening for the reception of the child. The edges of the sections at said opening are suitably padded or upholstered to form a cushion E to prevent injury to the child.
On the under side of the stool and at the rear of the circular opening there is a curved guide-arm F, one end of which is fixed to the section A, and the other end thereof extends loosely through two guide-sockets g g on the other section B. When the two top sections are moved apart to admit or remove the child, the said two guides g g move on the curved guide-arm in the arc of a circle corresponding to the extent of movement of the two hinged sections, and said parts also serve to maintain said sections in fixed relation. In front of the circular opening on the under side are two locking-bolts H I, one on each section and each adapted to engage with a keeper h i on the opposite section. Each keeper has a threaded opening and a thumbscrew j working therein to confine the bolt ends. By this means after the child has been placed within the opening the free ends of the sections may be locked to confine it.
It will be seen that the two stool-sections are flatsurfaced and broad. Consequently the child by resting its arms thereon can partially support theweight of its body, which is a manifest advantage when the child is learning to walk. This broad surface also allows toys and other articles to be placed thereon without danger of being knocked 01f or of accidentally falling off. The stool-sections are supported, as usual, upon four legs K, which are mounted on rollers.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
1. In a childs walking-stool, the combination of two broad flat sections hinged at their rear and having their adjoining edges each providedwith a semicircular opening, guide sockets or loops on one section in rear of said opening, a guide-arm having one end secured to the other section and a curved free end fitting loosely in said guide-sockets, and a catch in front of the opening to hold the said two sections closed.
2. In a childs walking-stool, the combination of two broad fiat sections hinged at their rear and having their adjoining edges each provided with a semicircular opening, guide sockets or loops on one section in rear of said opening, a guide-arm having one end secured to the other section and a curved free end fitting loosely in said guide-sockets, a keeper at the front on each section, a'bolt also on each section and each adapted to engage the keeper on the opposite section, and a thumbscrew connecting with each keeper to confine the bolts therein.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NILS P. LINDAHL.
