SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,337, dated December 28, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, CHARLES W. Rossnr- TER and HADLEY R. RossE'rrER, citizens of the United States, residing at Emporia, in the county of Lyon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamplighters; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention relates to lamp-lighting devices, and more particularly to a combined match-magazine and igniter for use in lighting locomotiveheadlights; and the objects thereof are to so construct the same that a number of matches maybe carried in a magazine formed in the plunger thereof and be fed forward to the igniting-jaws as desired.

With these and other objects in view our invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts and in the various details thereof, as will be first fully pointed outin the specification and then claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like symbols of reference represent corresponding parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective View of our invention complete. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a section of the device in detail, showing the spring-pin in its normal position for holding the matches in the magazine.

A represents the tubular case of ourdevice; c, the serrated igniting-jaws of the same; a, a screw-cap at the end thereof, and b a longitudinal slit in the igniting-head to give a springy action to the same.

9 is aspring-operated pin adapted to slide in the opening 1), formed in the main tube, a spring f being attached to the plunger by any suitable means, the upper part of said pin forming a button or thumb-piece to raise the spring and also to act as a stop to hold the plunger in the tube A, while the lower portion terminates in a sharp pin and passes through the perforation in the tube B, so as to close the passage in the same.

0 is a spring encircling the plunger and lying between the cap 01 thereof and the cap a of the tube A, the object thereof being to hold the plunger normally retracted.

The operation of our device is as follows: By removing the screw-plug e a sufficient number of matches to fill the magazine may be inserted, and when it is desired to use the same the plunger is depressed against the power of spring 0 until it comes within the opening 17, when by catching hold ofthe thumb-piece g it may be raised so that the pin will be withdrawn from the bore of the cylinder and a match may be slid forward by gravity to the igniter. When the spring-pin is released, it may either impinge upon the stem of the match or lie at the rear of the same, according to the size of the match used or the length of the igniting portion of the device. Vhen it is desired to fire the match, it is only necessary to depress the plunger,

and it will be ignited by coming in contact with the serrated jaws of the igniter. This operation may be repeated until the matches in the magazinev are exhausted, when it may be refilled for further use.

If desired, the matches may be fed in the opening I) as used; but of course it is preferable to feed them from the magazine.

Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a device of the character described, the combination with the main casing thereof, of a hollow plunger working within the same, a spring-pin located upon the outer end thereof and adapted to close the bore of the same and act as a stop to hold the plunger within the main casing, means for holding said plunger normally retracted, and means for igniting the match when the plunger is depressed.
