SOLE-ROUNDING MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,296, dated December 28, 1897.
Application filed March 27, 1897- To all whom. itv may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. GODDARD, of Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sole- Rounding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a sole-rounding machine of the so-called Julian type, comprising a rotary table, a knife-holder movable back and forth on the table, a pressure device, such as a weight or spring, located below the table, and a flexible pressure-transmitting device, such as a chain or cord, connecting the pressure device with the knifeholder, the said pressure device and cord or chain constituting a means for yieldingly holding the knife against the edge of a fixed shown in reissued Letters Patent No. 11,501, dated July 2, 1895.
The present invention has for its object to provide certain improvements relating to the means for guiding the flexible pressure-transmitting device between the pressure device and the knife-holder. In the patent referred passing over two pulleys, both of which are.
is pivotally connected and which is itself pivotally connected to the aforesaid table. This particular arrangement of fixed pulleys produces undue friction and binding of the chain, which is prejudicial to the smooth working of the machine and which my present invention overcomes in a satisfactory manner.
The invention consists in the improvements which I shall now proceed to describe and claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a portion of the revolving table and some of the working parts connected therewith in a sole-rounding machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view of the principal feature of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, a designates a column supporting a rotary table I), which is Serial No. 629,518. (No model.)
rotated by suitable driving means. (Not shown.) A form or pattern 0 is fixedly supported above the table centrally thereof, and the leather to be cut is held thereon by a clamp c. The cutting-knife dis suitably supported in a holder d, which is pivoted at d to a segmental carrier 6, the latter being pivoted at e to the table I). The holder is yieldin gly actuated toward the pattern 0 by means of devices hereinafter referred to, so as to hold the knife to the edge of the pattern, and the rotation of the table carries the knife around the pattern, which properly guides it through the work.
The knife-holder is confined and firmly guided in'movement on its pivot by an areshaped gib f, fastened to the carrier 0, and the latter is similarly confined by a gib g, fastened to the table.
By means of mechanism consisting of a sun-gear fixed on the column a, a planet gear carried by the table, a crank fixed to the planet-gear, and a pitman h, connecting the said crank with the carrier 6, the knife-controlling parts are so moved as to accelerate the speed of the knife as it moves along the longer sides of the pattern 0 and retard the same as it is rounding the corners or toe and heel portions of said pattern.
As a means for holding the knife at up to the pattern 0, the knife-holder d is provided with a hook 01 to which is attached one end of a flexible connecting device, which may be the chain referred to in said patent, but as I prefer to make said connecting device of a strip of leather or other non-metallic material I will hereinafter refer to it as a cord. The said cord extends continuously from the arm d to a pressure exerting device or mechanism below the table. Said pressure-exerting device may be the same as shown in the abovementioned patentnamely, a lever carriedby the table and a ring-cam carried by the lever and having an undulating surface on which bears a roller-shod cross-bar carrying a suspended weight. The mutual reaction between the cam andthe weight causes a constant tension upon the cord 2', and the knife cl is thereby held constantly up to the pattern 0. A spring or springs may be. substituted for the Weight above mentioned.
The construction thus far described is fully set forth and described in the above mentioned patent and is not new with me. In carrying out my invention I substitute for the two pulleys shown in said patent for guidin g the pressure-transmitting device or chain (said pulleys being mounted on axes at right angles to each other) the oscillatory automatically-conforming guide next described. Said guide, as here shown, comprises a single pulley j, having a horizontal axis of rotation, and an arm 70, connected at one end by a vertical pivot 70 with the carrier e and adapted to oscillatehorizontally. The pulley j is journaled in ears 70 70 on the swinging end of the arm 7a. A small roller 70 is provided at the outer end of the arm 70, which rolls on the surface of the carrier 0 and allows the said arm to oscillate freely without binding on its pivot.
The laterally-movable pulley located between the knife -holder and the device that exerts a yielding pressure thereon permits the cord or chain to move laterally at the point where it passes over the pulley, and thus compensates for the various changes in the position of the knife-holder and permits the cord or chain to pass without lateral defleetion from the knife-holder to the pressure device. The cord or chain therefore has a compensating guide which prevents the injurious strain and wear resulting from lateral deflection of the cord or chain and the liability of breakage of the chain or flexible connecting device, which has always been a source of great difiiculty in machines of this type when the said connecting device has been guided by the two pulleys, as heretofore.
I claim- 1. A sole-rounding machine comprising a rotary table, a movable carrier mounted thereon, a knife-holder above the table, adapted to move back and forth on said carrier, a device below the table for exerting yielding pressure on the knife-holder, a flexible pressure-transmitter extending horizontally from the knife-holder to a point over the table, and from thence vertically through the table to said pressure device, and a compensating 5o guide whereby the pressure-transmitter is permitted to pass from the knife holder to the pressure device without lateral deflection.
2. A sole-rounding machine comprising a rotary table, a movable carrier mounted thereon, a knife-holder adapted to move back and forth on said earrier,a device below the table for exerting yielding pressure 011 the knife holder, a flexible pressure transmitter extending horizontally from the knife holder to a point over the table and from thence vertically through the table to said pressure device, a pulley engaged with said pressuretransmitter, and a support for said pulley mounted on the carrier and having provisions for exerting yielding pressure on the knifeholder, a flexible pressure-transmitter extending horizontally from the knife holder to apoint over the table, and from thence vertically through the table to said pressure device, an arm pivotally connected at one end with said carrier and adapted to oscillate horizontally, and a pulleyjournaled in bearings on the swinging end of said arm and engaged with said pressure transmitter, the
said arm and pulley constituting an oscillatory guide for the pressure transmitter, whereby the said pressure transmitter is permitted to pass from the knife-holder to the pressure device without lateral deflection.
