Be it known that I, JAMES S. JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fabric-Cutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
, My invention relates to a fabric cutterand erence to the drawings inwhich:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the machine; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the machine, showing parts in section; Fig. 3-is a front elevation of the machine, showing parts broken away for purposes of illustration; Fig. 4 is a detail view, showing a front elevation of certain wheels and a knife employed; Fig. 5 is a perspective detail view of a fork employed; Fig. 6 is a perspective view in detail of a knife employed; Fig. '7
is a detail perspective view of a lever; Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of a spring member; Fig. 9 is a fragmentary detatil view of a fabric, showing arib formed therein.
Referring to the drawings in a more detailed description thereof, the base of the machine is represented by -1 which supports at one end an armor elbow 2. The
'arm 2 is provided at its forward end with a threaded bore 3 for the receptionv of a member 4 having a head 5, that is corrugated for the purpose of turning the same. The bore 3 is reduced at 6 and extends through the said arm 2 for the housing of the upper portion? of the fork 8. The upper portion 7 of the fork 8'is reduced at 9, whereby to form a shoulder 10 against which the lower surface 11 of the member 4 will bear to force the fork 8 downward when desired. The lower ends of the fork 8' are recessed at 1212, whereby to form the open the flexible rollers 1515, preferably made of rubber, and a metallic knife 16, having an edge 17. 1 The rollers '15 and the knife bearings to receive the reduced ends 1313 T of the shaft 14, upon which are journaled 16 bear against the roller 18 mounted upon the shaft 19 having the hearings in the brackets or standards 202O secured or integral with the base l. The shaft 19 is held from lateral displacement by the bosses 21Y21, secured tothe said shaft. 'A driving wheel 22 is keyed to one end of the said shaft 19. The driving wheel 22 is connected by a belt' to any source of power supply that is found convenient.
Disposed in front" of the, knife 16, is a 9 guide 23, which is formed in inverted U shape. The upper portion of the guide 23 is secured by the screws 2424 to the outer end of the lever 25, recessed at26 forthe purpose. The guide 23 is provided with a screw bolt 27that passes through the apertures in the sides 28 and 29 of the said guide 23. The outer end of the bolt 27 is headed at 30 and carries a washer 31. On the opposite end of the-bolt 27, there is mounted a finger nut 32, by; the turning of which nut in a given direction, the side 29 of the guide 23 will be drawn inward, whereby to adjust the distance of the lower edge 34 of the side 29 with reference to the lower edge 33 of the side 28 of the said guide By turning the nut 32 in the opposite direction, the nor- 'mal spring tendency of'the guide 23, caused by bending the sides 28 and 29 in the U shaped formation, will compel the side 29 to recede from the side 28, and hence the edge 34 from the edge 33.
' The lever 25 is fulcrumed at 35 to the shaft 36, which is housed in a recess in the 7 arm 2. The upper portion of the shaft 36 is threaded for the mounting of the nut 37. The lever 25 is moved orjournaled upon its fulcrum 35 by means ofthe shaft 38, housed in a recess in the'arm'2 and pivotally con- 'nected to alever 25 at 39. 1 The upper portion of the shaft 38 isfthreaded for the mounting of the nut 40 having a circumferential groove 41 and a corrugated portion 42- The groove41 is adapted forthe reception of the forked end 43 of the spring member 44 having an aperture 45 for the projection therethrough of the upper threaded portion of the shaft 36. The function of the spring member 44 is tomaintain the nut 40 in a given horizontal plane, and thereby cause the shaft 38 to move in a vertical plane, when the nut 40 is being turned. The vertical movement of the shaft 38, effects a movement of the lever 25, and thereby permits the adjusting of the lower edges 33 and 34 of the guide 23, with reference to the upper surface 48 of the cover 46. The cover 46 is provided with a depending side portion 47, whereby to inclose certain of the working Parts of the machine. The cover 46 is held in assembled position upon the ma chine, by the screws 49 that are passed through the apertures in the said cover 46, so as the top surfaces of the said screws will lie flush with the surface 48 of the said cover 46, and are secured in the threaded apertures in the bracket 50 and the brackets or standards 20. The upper surface 48 of the cover 46 has a recess 51 for the projection ofthe upper portion of the roller 18. The sides of the said recess 51 are beveled as at 5252, whereby there will be very little space between the said roller 18 and the sides 52 0f the recess 51, so as to prevent the fabric 53 from being caught therebetween.
To actuate the machine, the operator, first adjusts, the guide 23 with reference to the upper surface 48 of the cover 46by turning the nut 40, the arm 2 being provided with a recess 60 for a given amount of movement of the lever 25 upon its fulcrum 35. The flexible rollers 15 and the knife 16 are also adjusted relative to the roller 18 by turning the member 4. The lower edges 33 and 34 of the guide 23 are likewise adjusted, so as to accommodate therebetween, the width of the rib 61. of the fabric 53. The edge '34 of the side 29 of the guide 23 is slightly curved as at 62, whereby to approach the edge 33 of the side 28, when the side 29 is forced inward by turning the finger nut 32. The roller 18 is rotated by means of the driving pulley 22, and likewise the rollers 15 and the knife 16 are revolved through frictional contact with the roller 18. The fabric 53 is disposed upon the surface 48 0f the cover 46, with the rib 61 thereof, in alinement with the edges 33 and 34 of the guide 23. The operator, then keeping a hand on either side of therib 61 0f the fabric 53, pushes it toward the knife 16, whose edgeu17 is in alinement with the inner surface of the edge 33 of the side 28 of the guide 23. Immediately the fabric 53 comes into contact with the rotating surfaces of the roller 18 and the knife edge'17, it is drawn therebetween and severed along the edge of the rib 61.
Various well known means for regulating the speed of the revolution of the rollers 15 and 18, and of the knife 16 may be employed, if desired. IIaving thus what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a fabric cutter, a knife, a roller described my invention,
bearing against said knife,means for rotating said roller and said knife, a U shaped guide for directing a product to said knife and means for adjusting said U-shaped guide.
2. In a fabric cutter, a knife, a roller bearing against said knife, means for rotating said roller and said knife, a U shaped guide for directing a product to said knife, means for adjusting said knife wit-h reference to said roller and means for adjusting said U-shaped guide.
3. In a fabric cutter, the combination of a circular knife, a roller bearing against said knife, means for regulating the tension of said knife against said roller, a U shaped guide for directing a fabric to said knife and means for adjusting said Ushaped guide.
4. In a fabric cutter of the character described, the combination of a knife, flexible rollers disposed on either side of said knife, a roller bearing against said knife and said flexible rollers, means for rotating said rollers and said knife, aU shaped guide disposed in front of said knife, and means for adjusting said guide.
5. In a fabric cutter, the combination of a knife, flexible rollers disposed on either side of said knife, a roller bearing against said knife and said flexible rollers, means for rotating said rollers and said knife, a U shaped guide disposed in front of said knife, means for adjusting said guide, and means for adjusting said knife with reference to said roller.
6. In a fabric cutter, the combination of a frame supporting a cover, a fork adjustably mounted in said frame, open bearings on said fork for supporting a shaft, a knife mounted upon said shaft, a roller bearing rollers, means for adjusting the tension on 7 said knife and flexible rollers relative to sa1d second named roller, means for rotating said rollers and said knife, a U shaped guide,
said knife, means for regulating the tension of said knife against said roller, a U shaped 7 guide for directing a rib in a fabric to said 15 knife and means for adjusting said U-shaped guide with reference to the lower edges thereof.
