MACHINE FOR CUTTING EMBROIDERYBACKGROUND;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALoIs TSCHERNE, a subject of the Emperor of r'kustria-Hungary, residing at Rorschach, I-Iafenplatz, Switzerland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Cutting Embroidery-Background; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Machines for cutting embroidery background have been devised heretofore in which the fabric is cut by the relative movement of the cutting means and the fabric. Stretching means are arranged in this kind of machines on both sides of the cutting place by which the fabric is conveyed to the cutting edge in a stretched condition. Heretofore both these stretching means exerted a higher or lower pressure on the fabric, but the pressure exerted by both the means was always equal and constant during the time of cutting. With these machines the edges of the cutting means became dull and even notchy within a short time. For this reason attempts have been made to change the cutting part of the edge of the cutting means. But this is objectionable since the slot which is bounded at one side by the cutting means does not retain its adjusted width so that a neat cut could not be attained. It has been found by experiments that the short life of the cutting means is due to the variable resistance of the fabric to the cutting means, which resistance is produced by the variable hardness of the fabric. Thereby the edge of the knife becomes worn unequally. To prevent this according to my invention I arrange one of the stretching means so that it will yield to suit the variable hardness of the fabric.
Experiments have proved that by this arrangement the cutting means are kept sharp and uninjured for a longer time and a neat cut is warranted.
A construction according to this invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 shows in elevation a portion of a machine according to my invention. Fig.

The arm 5 is secured to the frame of the machine. The bracket 17 is also secured to the frame and provided with a bearing 18 by which an axle 19 is supported and pre vented from moving in axial direction. The arm 20 secured to the axle 19 rotatably supports a shoe 21 on which an endless apron 22 -is-mounted forming a stretching device at one side of the cut. A fork-shaped support 23 to which is pivotally connected a lever 24 is slidably mounted on the axle 19. The lever 24 rotatably carries a shoe 25 on which an endless apron 26 is mounted forming a stretching device at the other side of the cut. A screw spindle 28 engages a projection 27 of the support 23. The spindle is immovably in axial direction supported by a bearing 29 secured to the axle 19. A hand-wheel 30 is fixed to the spindle. The shoe carrying the apron 26 can be laterally displaced by turning the hand-wheel 30. The axle which connects the lever 24; to the support 23 carries a hand-wheel 34 and an adjustable ring 31 to which is secured one end of a spring 32 the other end 33 of which presses against the lever 24 (Fig. 5). axle is prevented by a set-screw 35 from being turned by the spring 32. After the set-screw 35 is loosened the tension of the spring 32 can be adjusted by turning the hand-wheel 34. The arm 20 is connected to the support 23 by an axle 36. To the latter is connected a hand-lever 37 provided with a nose 38 which engages a nose 39 of a part 4-0 connecting the axles 36 and 19 to each other. By reversing the hand-lever 37 both the st-retchin devices can be lifted at the same time. spring lever 42 with a nose 41 is mounted on the hand lever 37. For securing the shoes 21 and 25 in a raised position the nose 41 can be turned and fixed behind 'a stop 4-3 mounted on the arm 5.

What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s 2- 1. In a machine for cutting embroidered fabric, a cutting member, endless stretching members on opposite sides of the cutting The member arranged to stretch the fabric in its plane and in the direction of its Width, and means to hold one of said members in yielding contact with the fabric.
2. In a machine for cutting embroidered fabric, a cutting member, endless stretching members on opposite sides of the cutting member arranged to stretch the fabric in its plane and in the direction of its Width, yielding means to press one of the stretching members onto the fabric, and means to regulate the pressure of the pressing means.
3. In a machine for cutting embroidered fabric, a cutting member, a stretching member on one side of the latter in fixed relation thereto, a pivoted arm on the opposite side of the cutter, a stretching member on the arm, said stretching members adapted to stretch fabric in its plane and in the direction of its Width, a spring to depress said arm, and means to adjust the tension of the spring.
4. In a machine for cutting embroidered fabric, the combination with a cutting member, of a stretching member on one side of and in fiXed relation to the latter, a rotatable pivot, an arm pivoted thereon on the opposite side of the cutting member, a stretching member carried by the arm, a spring fixed at one end on the pivot and having its free end pressing on the arm, and means to lock the pivot in adjusted position.
