ATENT LADDER-SCAFFOLD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,151, dated December 28,1897. Application filed July 6, 1397. Serial No. 643,509. (No model.)
To wZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ULIUS FUNCKE, manufacturer, a citizen of the Kingdom of Prussia, and a resident of Charlottenburg, near Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ladder-Scaffolds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a ladder-scaffold.
As is well known, in the erection of buildings or to facilitate painting, cleaning, &c.,
it is necessary to have an exterior scaffolding,
which must extend the entire height of the building. 1
' This invention therefore has for its object the utilization of ladders arranged vertically at intervalsin front of a building and properly braced'to prevent lateral movement, each ladder being secured to the face of the wall of the building by suitable connections, and a scaffold-support attachable to the ladder at any point in its height after the ladder has been attached to the wall.
The object of the invention is, therefore, to provide simple and fficient means to secure the ladders to the face of the wall of the buildin g and the foot-board, upon which the workmen stand and are supported, to the ladders.
The invention consists, in combination with the ladder, of a bar, with means for adjustably securing the bar to the ladder, said'bar normally carrying upon its outer end means comprising an expansion-bolt for securing the bar, and consequently the ladder, to the face of the wall of the building. I
The invention further consists in a novel form of support for the scaffold, comprising two independent sections, one section passing through and having a support within both of the sides of the ladder, being passed therethrough from the outer side, which allows of the support being attached to the ladder after the ladder is secured to the face of the wall, and a brace secured to the ladder and to the arm by a suitable clamp, which also serves the purpose 'to secure the foot-board upon the support.
The invention still further consists in the parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a ladder, illustrating the means for securing the ladder to the face of a wall and the foot-board connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 4 is a detailed sectional view of the expansion-bolt normally carried by the ladder-supporting bar for securing the same to the faceof a wall. Fig. 5 is a detailedperspective view of the end of the ladder-supporting arm, illustrating the pivotal hooks carried thereby.
A designates the ladder, which comprises the usual side pieces a and the rounds or steps a, the ladder when in operative position in front of the face of the wall having the rounds thereof extending at right angles to the wall.
13 designates the supporting-arm for the ladder, which is secured to the ladder by the bolts 0, each having an inner curved end 0, which embraces a portion of the curved outer side a of the ladder, anda shank 0 extends forwardly and through a longitudinal slot Z) in the arm B.
c is a nut screwing upon the shank c of the bolt 0, which bears against the face of the arm B to frictionally hold the arm in its adjusted position upon the ladder. Pivotally secured to the arm at b are the hook-arms D, each of which is provided with a hook end d, oppositely arranged to each other, the hookarms being held in a closed relation by a loop E, slidingly arranged upon the arm B and designed to contact with the inclined sides e of the hook-arms D when the loop is moved forward to hold the hook-arms in a closed relalation, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 5, the loop beingheld from movement upon the arm B by the set-screw c, screwing through the loop and bearing against one of the h00k-arms.
F designates an expansion-bolt, which comprises the body f, having a bore of different diameters, an enlarged bore f of a uniform diameter, and bore f conical in shape. Seated in the bore f is the head G of the eyebolt 9, the'eyeloolt being screw-threaded and having secured thereon the two nuts g, which are housed between theplates g and g p and which serve to adjust the eyebolt longitudinally with reference to the bolt F. Within the .head G is a longitudinal screw-threaded bore, in which screws the stem H of the conical expanding-die h. The inner end of the bolt F is slotted, as at 1?", whereby the said end may be expanded, as shown in Fig. 1.
To secure the ladder to the face of the wall, the wall is first provided with recesses J, which are enlarged slightly at their inner ends to form inclined sides. The bolt F is inserted therein, the flange upon the plate g serving as a stop to limit the inward movement of the bolt. The eyebolt is now revolved, which is accomplished by the operator grasping the arm 13, which is secured thereto, the ends d of the hook-arms D being engaged in the eye G of the eyebolt, and the die 7i is consequently pulled forward, expanding the rear end of the bolt F to cause its exterior surface to frictionally impinge on the interior surface of the orifice in the bolt. The arm B is now brought forward coincident with the ladder and is secured thereto by the hookarms I), as shown in Fig. 3, thus providing a positive secure attachment between the ladder and the wall, an attachment not liable to be detached by the movement of the ladder in any direction. Extending through the sides of the ladder at intervals in the height of the ladder are orifices ed, the orifices on each side being in horizontal alinement.
K designates a rod having a head upon one end of the same, the rod being of a size to pass through the orifices c and to project into the space between the ladder and the wall.
In setting the ladder-scaffold it is necessary to first secure the ladder to the face of the wall and to then attach the foot-board thereto at the desired height. Consequently the foot-board support is arranged upon the ladder after the ladder is secured to the wall.
By referring to Fig. I it will be readily seen that due to the length of the rod K it must be inserted through the orifices in the side of the ladder from the outside,or in the direction of the arrow 1. Consequently the rod K must be a straight rod of a uniform size in crosssection throughout its entire length.
L designates a brace interposed between the inner end of the rod K and theinner side of the ladder, the lower end of the brace being angled, as at Z, and extending into one of the orifices a in the side of the ladder, the upper end Z being angled and extending parallel and in abutment with the rod K, and being secured thereto by a clamp M, embracing the end of the rod K and the angled end Z of the brace L, pressure being secured by the said screw on.
N designates the foot-board, which is supported upon the rod K and is secured thereon between the clamp M and the inner side of the ladder. Projecting upwardly from the clamp M is an angled finger m, which projeets over the edge of the foot-board to hold the foot-board down upon the rod K.
m is a setescrew upon the side of the clamp M, which bears against the angled endl' to secure the clamp upon the brace. It will thus be seen that the clamp M has two operations to secure the inner ends of the rod and brace together and to clamp and secure the footboard upon the rod and against the inner side of the ladder.
The several parts of the device, being socured together as described, do not provide a multiplicity of loose parts which are liable to fall when settingfthe scaffolding and thus injure the person, being a feature of great importance. The arm B acting as a lever for turning the eyebolt J does away with the necessity of using supplemental tools in setting the scaffolding, a feature of great importance in view of the height and position of the workmen upon the ladder.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. In a ladder-scaffold, a ladder, a bar clamped thereto extending laterally across the same, oppositely-moving hook-arms pivotally secured to the said arm, and an eyebolt and means for securing the same in a building, the hooks upon the hook arm extending through the eye of the eyebolt from opposite sides of the same, substantially as described.
2. In a ladder-scaffold, a ladder, a bar clamped thereto extending laterally across the same, oppositely-moving hook-arms pivotally secured to the said arm, an eyebolt and means for securing the same in a building, the hooks upon the hook arm extending through the eye of the eyebolt from opposite sides of the same, and a loop slidingly arranged upon the bar for engagement with the hook-arms to hold them in a closed relation in the eye of the eyebolt, substantially as described.
In a ladder-scaffold, a ladder, a bar clamped thereto extending laterally across the same, oppositely-moving hook-arms pivotally secured to the said arm, an eyebolt and means for securing the same in a building, the hooks upon the hook arm extending through the eye of the eyebolt from opposite sides of the same, a loop slidingly arranged upon the bar for engagement with the hookarms to hold them in a closed relation in the eye of the eyebolt, and a set-screw passing through the loop and bearing against one of the hook-arms to hold the loop in an adjusted position, substantially as described.
4-. In a ladder-support, a ladder, an arm adj ustabl y secured thereto, an expansion-bolt carried by the arm comprising a partially slotted shell, an eyebolt extending into the shell and having a revolution therein, means for adjusting the eyebolt longitudinally in the shell, a wedge-shaped die located in the shell having a screw-threaded extension extending into a screw-threaded bore in the inner end of the eyebolt, whereby when the eyebolt is revolved, the die is either moved forward orbackward and the casing expanded or allowed to resume its normal condition, substantially as described.
