ACETYLENE-GAS BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,112, dated December 28, 1897.
Application filed April 3, 1897. Serial No. 630,639. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, LEONARD .HENKLE and FREDERICK H. GODDARD, citizens of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene-Gas Burners; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in gas-burners, and especially to a burner for use in burning gases which are rich in carbon, whereby in the combustion of the gas a sufficient supply of oxygen may be had to produce a perfectly clear and smokeless flame and thus prevent the filling up of the apertures in the jet incident to incomplete combustion of acetylene or other gas.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be defined in the appended claims.
We clearly illustrateour invention-in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective View of the burner. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a detail view of the apertured valve member.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the portion of the burner which is designed to be attached to the gas-fixture and has at its end a chamber or cylinder B, into which leads the gas-duct Z). About the circumference of this chamber is a series of fine apertures 13, through which the gas is designed to pass. The valve regulating the said series of apertures consists of the member 0, which may be of band steel or other suitable material, and has a, series of apertures (3, which are disposed so that they will coincide or register with the apertures in the circumference of the said chamber when it is desired to allow the gas to pass out of the chamber. This member is held by rivets t0 the bifurcated handle D, between the arms of which the band or member may be held and tightened by a screw d, which passes through and has screw-threaded connection with the said arms. In order to limit the movement of the apertured band or member, stops E are provided, which are secured to the gas chamber or cylinder and against which the ends of the arms of the handle strike as the handle is moved back and forth, so as to bring the two series of apertures in alinement or to close same, as may be desired.
In order to have easy access to the gaschamber for the purpose of cleansing same, We make one of the sides thereof in the form of a screw-threaded cap, which maybe tightened by a wrench and easily removed.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the drawings forminga part of this application, it will be seen that a burner is produced in which a sufficient amount of oxygen is afiorded to effect a complete combustion of the carbon of the gas, and the full pressure of'the gas to be burned is exerted almost directly at the points of combustion,
'even when the gas is turned low.
ed end to said chamber, the apertured band mounted on the said chamber, the bifurcated handle to the arms of which the ends of the band are secured, and the stops secured to the chamber, and against which the ends of the arms are designed to bear, combined substantially as shown and described.
