LAM P-BLAZE-EXTINGUISHING BURNER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,824, dated December 21, 189'?- Application filed December 12 1896. Serial No. 615,524. (No model.)
' a citizen of the United States, residing at Allenton, in the county of Washington and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp-Blaze-Extinguishing Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in lamps, and has more particular relation to extinguishing-burners for lamps.
The invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a vertical section through a lamp-burner provided with my extinguisher, said section being taken just to one side of thelatter. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged detail perspective View of my improved extinguisher disconnected from the lamp-burner, the extinguishing-plate being thrown away from the tube; and Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of a lamp-burner with my invention applied thereto, the chimney being tipped and the extinguisher in its operative position.

The extinguisher proper, 0, comprises arod c, the opposite ends of which are journaled in the burner-ring, so as to cause said rod to pass to the rear of the wick-tube a Ayoke c has its respective ends secured to said rod 0, so that it extends forward and about said wick-tube a This yoke is provided upon diametrically opposite sides with elongated slots 0 in which are mounted journal-pins 0 formed integral with arms 0 of an extinguishing-plate c. The said pins 0 before entering the elongated slots 0 pass through apertured arms 0 formed upon the respective opposite sides of the extinguishing-tube 0 which is adapted to slide upon the wick tube 6L2. The upper end of said tube 0 is cut at an angle, as at 0 so as to permit the extinguishing-plate c to lie flat over the same when said plate is tipped into this position. The said plate 0 projects through the slot at in the perforated top of the burner-ring, so that when the tube 0 and said plate 0 are simultaneously raised the said plate will be caused to pass forward over the upper open end of the tube 0 and thus extinguish the blazeof the wick a by cutting off its supply of oxygen. The rod 0 is surrounded by coil-spring c", bent at its middle into al 0 and having its opposite ends bearing ander the yoke O. Said loop 0 is adapted to engage the under side of the burner-ring, so that the yoke O and the devices carried thereby are normally forced upward. hold the said yoke down when the lamp is in use, I provide it at its forward end with an ex tended arm 0 provided at its forward end with a pivoted segmental catch 0 having a shoulder 0 and a handle 0. The said catch 0 is adapted to work through the radial slot 0. in the rim of the burner-ring. When the tube a and plate 0 are to be depressed out of the way of the wick a the handle 0 is grasped and the catch 0 forced downward until the shoulder engages the under side of the rim of the lamp-ring.
It will now be observed that when the chimney is placed upon the lamp-ring the lower edge of the same engages the upper segmental end of the catch 0 and forces it inward, thus disengaging the shoulder 0 from the under side of the ring, but still holding said catch 0 down by bearing upon the handle 0. The said catch 0 is now free to rise should the pressure of the chimney thereon be released. This pressure of the chimney when in its normal position is suffi cient to keep the said catch depressed; but should the lamp be tipped or fall to one side, so that the chimney is slightly displaced, the said catch 0 will immediately rise, and thus permit the tube 0 to slide up over the wicktube and the plate 0 to come down over the upper end of said tube a and extinguish the blaze.
In order to When it is desired to extinguish a lamp provided with my improvement, it is not necessary to blow the same, as a simple tipping action of the chimney will immediately extinguish the lamp, and upon forcing the chimney down in place again the tube a" and plate 0 will be immediately withdrawn out of the way, so that the lamp may be instantly relighted when so desired.
By the employment of my invention all danger of fire or injury from lamps being accidentally knocked over is reduced to a minimum. The chimney B is mounted in the respective spring-arms of the burnerring. Said spring-arms engage the chimney with just sufficient friction so that the slightest tipping action out of a vertical plane will cause said chimney to disengage from said spring-arms and permit the catch 0 to opcrate.
While my improvement is always ready to instantly extinguish the lamp, either by the accidental falling of the same or the intentional tipping of the chimney, it at the same time does not in any wise interfere with the ordinary action of the lamp or the perfect lighting of the same.
My improved extinguisher consists of very few parts arranged in a very simple manner and fully protected from all injury by being located within the lamp-ring, thus rendering it next to impossible for the lamp to fall so as to injure the said parts and render them inoperative.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In alamp-extinguisher, the combination with a lamp-burner proper, of a sliding tube surrounding the wick-tube, a pivoted plate connected to said sliding tube so as to move therewith, means for forcing said tube and plate upward so as to cause the latter to close over the top of the former to cut 03 the supply of air thereto, and a catch for holding said tube adapted to be engaged and held down by the chimney, substantially as described.
2. In alamp-extinguisher, the combination with a lamp-burner, of a sliding tube mounted upon the wick-tube, a pivoted plate connected to said sliding tube so as to move therewith and having a lip at its upper end adapted to lap over and close the upper end of the sliding tube when the tube and plate are forced upward, a spring for forcing said tube and plate upward to bring them together above the wick-tube, and a pivoted catch adapted to hold said tube and plate down against the tension of the spring and be engaged by the lamp-chimney so that upon the latter being tipped or moved said catch will be released, substantially as described.
3. In a lamp-extinguisher, the combination with a lamp-burner proper, of an extinguishing device connected to the wick-tube, a pivoted catch connected to said extinguishing device for holding the same normally down out of the way, a shoulder formed on said catch and adapted to normally engage the under side of the lamp-rin g, and a lateral arm also mounted on said catch and adapted to be engaged by the chimney when the latter is in position; the construction being such that the pivoted catch is disengaged from the lamp-ring upon the application of the chimney and held from rising by the latter, substantia-lly as described.
4. I11 a lamp-extinguisher, the combination with a lam p-burner proper, of a yoke pivotally mounted in the same, a spring connecting said yoke and the burner for normally forcing the former upward, a tube surrounding the wick-tube and connected to said yoke, a pivoted plate also connected to said yoke and projecting through the top of the perforated burner-plate, and a pivoted catch connected to said yoke and adapted to be normally held down by the lampchimney, so that when the latter is removed said catch will be released to permit the tube, and pivoted plate to rise, and come together before the Wick-tube to extin guish the blaze,substantially as described.
5. In a lamp-extinguisher, the combination with a burner proper, of a spring-pressed yoke pivoted in the same and provided with elongated slots, a tube adapted to surround the wick tube and provided with apertured arms, an extinguishing-plate adapted to project through the top of the perforated burner- -plate and provided with laterally-projecting pins that pass through the apertured arms'of the tube and enter the elongated slots of the yoke, a catch pivotally mounted on said yoke and provided with a shoulder adapted to engage the under side of the burner-ring, and so constructed as to be normally held down by the lamp-chimney, substantially as described.
