BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,814, dated December 21, 1897. Application filed February 1, 1897. Serial No. 621,525. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAVE KOCH, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to bottles and bottlestoppers; and it consists of a stopper comprising a plug of hard material adapted to be inserted. in the neck of a bottle, an elastic packing secured to the plug, a longitudinal slot axially through the plug, segmental slots on opposite sides of the slotin the head of the plug, a band rotatably secured to the neck of the bottle, and a bow, pivotally secured to the band and adapted to lock the stopper in the neck of the bottle.
My invention further consists in the peculiar construction of the packing and in the mode of its attachment to the plug, whereby the packing, besides serving for hermetically closing the space between the walls of the neck of the bottle on the body of the plug, is also utilized as a spring for the purpose of ejecting the plug when the pressure holding it in the neck of the bottle is released.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is an elevation, partly a section, showing my improved bottle-stopper in the mouth of the bottle and secured in this position. Fig. 2 is a side view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation at a right angle, to Fig. 1, showing my improved bottle-stopper set in the mouth of .the bottle, but not locked. Fig. 4 is a similar elevation showing the bottle-stopper removed from the mouth of the bottle. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section on line 6 6 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 7 is a bottom view of the elastic packing.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views of the drawings.
Plug a, preferably produced of porcelain or some similar substance in the shape shown in the drawings, is concavely tapered from the head toward its flanged end. Slightly above this end a groove b is provided in the body of the plug, adapted to receive the flange b of the elastic packing c.
The packing is made of elastic material, preferably of rubber, and besides serving the purpose of hermetically closing the mouth of the bottle when the stopper is inserted the' peculiar arrangement of the flange b, held in the groove 6 of the stopper, will cause it to rebound when the pressure forcing the stopper in the mouth of the bottle is released, and thereby to eject the stopper from the mouth of the bottle.
The normal position of the packing on the body of the plug is shown in Fig. 3. Flange b is then on the level of the upper surface of the ring. When, however, the plug is pressed into the mouth of the bottle, the position of the ring in relation to the flange b is reversed, the ring being then turned upward. When the pressure is released, the packing strives to regain its normal position, the flange b, stretched under pressure, contracts, and the ring'c, returning to its position, lifts the stopper from the mouth of the bottle.
The locking of the stopper in the mouth of the bottle is accomplished by the bow d, which is pivotally connected to the band e, fitted turnably on the neck of the bottle in the recess underneath itshead.
In the body of the plug is provided a longitudinal slot f, parallel with the axis of the plug, extending from its head to about the middle of its body, and in connection therewith are provided the slots f and f forming segmental shoulders g and g, situated on itsv opposite edges. The shape and relative position of these segmental shoulders are shown in the sectional view, Fig. 6, and in the similar view, Fig. 5, is shown how the plug is locked in the neck of the bottle by the bow (1, turned over these shoulders into the slots f and f respectively.
Band e is made of a flat strip of metal, and bow dpreferably of spring-wire, and theyhave also the function of attaching the stopper permanently t0 the bottle, as shown in Fig. 4,when the same is removed from its mouth.
The operation of closing a bottle with my improved bottle-stopper and of removing it again is very simple and suggests itself from the foregoing description.
g The stopper will then be securely locked in the neck of the bottle. To open the bottle and to remove the stopper from its mouth, it is only necessary to turn the bow d back, bringing bridge (1 in parallel position with the slot f, whereupon the rebounding of the elastic packing will eject the stopper from the mouth of the bottle.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A stopper for hermetically closing the mouth of a bottle or similar vessel, comprisin g a conically-shaped plug, concavely tapering toward its flanged end and provided with a groove near its lower flanged end, an elastic packing-ring, having a flange on its inner periphery, secured in the groove, a longitudinal slot in the body of the plug, horizontal slots in the head of the plug connecting with the vertical slot and forming segmental shoulders, a band rotatably secured on the neck of p the bottle and a bow, pivotally secured to the band and passing through the slot of the plug.
2. In a bottle-stopper for hermetically closing the neck of a bottle or similar vessel, the a combination with a conical plug concavely tapered toward its flanged end, and having a vertical slot through its top, segmental slots communicatingwith the vertical slot and forming shoulders on the opposite upper edges thereof, a groove near its flanged end, and with an elastic packing, slid on the body of the plug and secured by its flange in the groove, of a band, set turnably on the neck of the bottle and of a bow, pivotally secured to the band and passing through the vertical slot of the stopper, and adapted to be slid on the segmental shoulders thereof for the purpose of lockin g the stopper in the mouth of the bottle.
3. In a stopper for-hermetically closing the neck of a bottle or similar Vessel, the combination with a comically-shaped plug, concavely tapered toward its flanged end and having a groove, adapted to receive and hold the flanged rim of. a packing, of an elastic packing-ring, circular in section having a flange around its inner periphery on the level with its upper surface, the packing-ring being secured by this flange in the groove in the body of the plug in such position, that when the stopper is pressed inward into the neck of a bottle, the flange is drawn and reacts as a spring when the pressure upon the plug is released.
