BOOK REST.

'UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
)ARL HEINRICH KOERNER, OF HAMBURG, GERMANY.
BOOK- REST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,779, dated December 21, 1897.
Application filed May 12, 1897. Serial No. 636,261. (No model.)
T0 LLZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL HEINRICH KOER- NER, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Rests for Use with Large Account-Books and the Like,of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in rests for use with large accountbooks and the like, the object being to make such rests more expedient and handy by attaching the usual tongue to be placed between the leaves of the book in such a manner to the actual supporting-plate that it may be shifted either to the right or to the left end of the supporting-plate; and with this end in view my invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter will be fully described.
A rest made according to my invention is illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which- Figure lis a perspective view of the improved rest as applied to a book; Fig. 2, a view showing the lower side of the rest; Fig. 3, a cross-section on the line I II, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view as Fig. 2, the tongue being adapted to slide along a longitudinal guidegroove of the supporting-plate. Fig. 5 illustrates a side view of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 a sectional end View of 'a modification of my improved rest when applied to a book.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The improved rest, adapted for use more particularly in making entries in large-sized account-books, consists of the well-known supporting-plate a and of the tongue b, arranged at an angle to the same. This tongue may be shifted either to the right or to the left end of the said supporting-plate, for which purpose it is inserted into one of the transverse guides or slideways a a', provided on the supporting-plate a, Figs. 2 and 8, or the said tongue Z) may be slid along a longitudinal guide-groove a2, with which the said plate 0, may be provided, Figs. 4 and 5. .The tongue b is in the usual mannerv placed between the leaves of the book into which entries are to be made, While the free end of the supporting-plate rests upon the opposite the tongue b is placed upon the right-hand or the left-hand side of the book one of the said fingers, either on the left or on the right, is placed over the book edge. In addition to this, when it is desired to Write on the half of the book which, in the horizontal position, does not touch the table-surface, such half .may be supported by a separate rest cl, provided with step-like notches or offsets, a feature which will prove particularly advantageous in those cases where the book portion so supportedis considerably thinner than the remaining part 0f the'l book.
The arrangement herein described affords a convenient and reliable rest to persons engaged in making entries in an account-book, especially where large-sized books are used, as well as where entries have to be made on both sides of a book.
In a slightly-modified form of the improved writing-rest the supporting-plate proper is formed of two portions or halves a3 a3, hinged or otherwise movably connected, as shown at a4, Fig. 6. For the central guide a', provided for the tongue b in the arrangement first described, there are here accordingly substituted two guide-rails o. a', one upon each half a3. A double or folding supporting-plate such as this enables the offset-rest d, mentioned above, to be dispensed With, as such plate, owing to its movable point, is capable of accommodating, if necessary, the angular shape of the open book. (See Fig. 5.) Besides, a writing-rest comprising such a double and folding plate a3 a3 affords the advantage that it may be folded up into compact shape when not in use.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A book-rest comprising a rest-plate a of a length substantially equal to the width of IOO an open book, a retaining-plate b adapted to be shifted from one side to the other of the longitudinal center of said restplate, the latter provided near eneh end with a retaininggroove and L finger c fitting either of said grooves, substantially as and `for the purpose Seiforth.
A booke-est Comprising a rest-plate a., of :t length substantially equal to the Width of an open book, said plate composed of two plates hinged together, 'a retaining-plate shiftable from one to the other side of the hinge-joint of said rest-platte, the latter provided near eaeh end with it retziining-groove and o linger fitting either groove, substantizilly as and for the purpose set forth.
