SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 595,758, dated December 21, 1897.
Application filed April '5, 1897. Serial No. 630,825. (No model.)
T on whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS BISHOP, a subj ect of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of 44 Deritend, in the city of Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Box- Covering Machines, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention consists of improvements relating to box-covering machines, my object being to produce an expansible or segmental supporting-block having simple and effective means for ready adjustment to the required size of box to be operated upon and to so construct and arrange such adjustable means or appliances that the block-segments can be rigidly secured in any position to which they may be set within the range or limit of adjustment.
In order that my invention may be the more readily understood, I append hereunto two sheets of explanatory drawings, to be hereinafter referred to.
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation, Fig. 2 a sectional end elevation, and Fig. 3 a plan, of a supporting-block constructed in accordance with my invention, the drawings illustrating the block at the minimum dimensions or compass for which it is constructed. Fig. 4 is a plan illustrating a method of stiffening or staying the box by extensions on the sliding arms, and Fig. 5 a sectional end elevation of one pair of such arms through the line ab at Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a sectional side elevation, and Fig. 7 a sectional end elevation,represent ing the outer or angular segments of the box extended to the maximum range of adjustment. Fig. 8 is an elevation to a larger scale, representing the construction of the telescopic joints of the segments and also the arrangement of the stops.
The same reference-letters in the different Views indicate the same parts.
I employ a base or bridge piece or carrier, such as A, having its upper part within the interior of the block-segments and provided with a central aperture A through the lower part for the reception of the block-spindle of the machine to which the block is to be attached. In the upper part of the base-piece A, I form a slot or slots A and such slotted part supports a pair of double arms 13 B and C 0, each provided with longitudinal slots. Each pair of double arms are secured to the slotted base or bridge piece or carrier A, preferably by a thumb-nut and bolt, as illustrated;
but on releasing the nuts the arms can be extended within the limits of the slot to suit the particular box to be operated upon. The adjustment in the one direction is effected by the movement of the slotted arms relatively to each other, and in the other direction by moving either or both pairs of double arms along the slotted bridge. In Fig. 1 each pair of arms are at their innermost positions upon the slotted bridge A, whereas in Fig. 6 they are shown at their outermost positions. In the same manner at Fig. 2 the arms B and C are shown at their innermost positions, whereas at Fig. 7 they are represented at their outermost positions.
One end of each of the arms B B O G is permanently attached, by soldering or otherwise, to one of the outer or angular metal or other plates or segments forming the boxblock, and thus as the arms are moved such segments partake of their movement, but when the arms are fixed by the thumb-nuts the segments are rigidly secured in the positions to which they have been adj usted.' The arms are secured to the angular segments, and these telescope with the segments F F G G, which comprise flat body portions with tubular edges adapted to embrace and telescope with similar tubular edges of the angular segments. The sliding or telescopic segments are prevented from complete detachment from the central segments when in the outermost positions (illustrated at Figs. 6 and 7) by means of stop-pegs D upon or adjacent to the ends of the segments, such stop-pegs being formed from strips or lengths of wire soldered or otherwise attached to their respective segments.
In constructing a box-block of large dimensions in accordance with my invention I provide lateral extensions, asE E, Fig. 4, upon the sliding arms for the purpose of stiffening orstaying the adjustable segments. The telescopic joints of the segments are formed at the upper and lower ends of the plates by turning over such edges of the plates to a tubular form, such as shown more clearly in the detail View Fig. 8, the tube on one plate being arranged to slide within the tube of the adjacent plate. The tubes formed with the central plates or segments F F and G G on each side are large or outer tubes, while the tubes formed with the angular plates or segments H H and J J are smaller or inner tubes arranged to telescope or slide within the outer tubes formed with the central plates. It will thus be understood that the complete boxblock is made up of four central plates or segments and four angular plates or segments, each of the sliding arms B B and C 0 being rigidly attached to one of such angular segments, which are themselves arranged to slide or telescope upon the said central segments.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is i 1. The combination in a segmental block for a box-covering machine of slotted arms as B B and C C so mounted in pairs upon a slotted bridge-piece or carrier A that the two pairs can be caused to recede from or approach each other in one straight-line direction, and the two arms of each pair to recede from or approach each other in a straight-line direction at right angles to the movement of the arms in pairs, substantially as described.
2. In combination, the bridge-piece having a slot, the two pairs of slotted arms thereon adjustable toward and from each other, the segments carried by the said arms, and the central segments telescoping therewith, substantially as described.
3. In combination, the bridgepiece, the two pairs of arms adjustable thereon toward and from each other, said arms of each pair being adjustable relatively to each other, the angular segments carried by said arms, the central segments telescoping with the angular segments, and the stops for limiting the movement of the segments, substantially as described.
-In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
. THOS. BISHOP.
