GEORGE H. PAGE, OF WATERFORD, AND JESSE SCOTT BUTTON, OF SCHEN- ECTADY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNORS TO COHOES ROLLING MILL CO., OF COHOES, NEW YORK, A CORPORATIONOF NEW YORK.
ADJUSTABLE SKID FOR\ TUBE-I'IVIIAKING APPARATUS.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '734,35'7, dated July 21, 1903.
Application filed September 22, 1902. Serial Ne. 124.281. No n)del` To' LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE H. PAGE, residing at Waterford, county of Saratoga, and JESSE SOOTTBUTTON,residingatSchenectady, county of Schenectady, State of New York, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Skids for Tube-Making Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The invention -relates to such improve mente; and it consists of the novel construction and combinatiou of parts hereinafter described and subsequently claimed.
Reference may be had to the accompanying drawings, and the reference characters marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. V
Similar characters refer to similar parts in the several figures.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a top plan View showing the draW-benchand delivery-trough of a tube-makiug apparatus provided with our improved adjustable skid mechanism. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same taken on the broken line 2 2 in Fig. 1 on a larger scale. Fig. 3 is a View, in side elevation, of the guide-trough for the free end of the skid. Fig. 4 is an end View of the same.
We have shown our invention in its application to a machine for making metal tubes wherein the tubes are formed from skelps, which are heated in the furnace and severally drawn through a shaping and welding bell upon a draw-bench, from which the tube is transferred to a delivery-trough, whence it is taken forfurther treatment. The deliverytrough is usually supported in a stationary position, While the draw-bench is made movable to adapt the same' to 'be brought into line with the different s'kelpsin the furnace.
`For convenience in transferring the tubos draW-bench to thedelivery-trough to automatically adjust and accommodate themselves to the different positions of thedrawbench due to its movement toward and fron ing end of the ben'ch being supported by a.
wheeled truck 7, adapted to travel upon. the floor 8 or other way provided therefor, said draW-bench and delivery-trough being constructed and adapte'd to operate in theusual manner. v
In carrying out our invention' we connec with the movable draw-bench a plurality of skids, each consisting of a rod 9, having at one end thereof a universal pivotal connection at 10 With such draw-bench and having its other end adapled to travel in and be supported by a guide-trough 11, projectng laterally from the delivery-trough 1 toward the draw-bench. i The g'ide-trough may be secur'ed to the delivery-trongh in any known manner, as by providing the guide-trough with a flange 12, adapted to be bolted to the side of the delivery-trough. The guidetrough opens beneath the delivery-trough, pe mitting the' skid -rod 9 to play freely through the open end of the guide-trough beneath the delivery-trough, as the position of said rod changes in accordance with the movement of the draW-bench. One wall 13 of the guide-trough is adapted to project from the delivery-trough in-line with the topof the delivery-trough on the sideadjacent to thedraW-bench. Asthedraw-'benchismoved toward and from the delivery;trough it will be seen that the swinging ends of skid-rods 9 will be caused to travel along the respective guide-troughs 11, said rods assuming from time to time different degrees of downward as well as lateral inclination. however, that in whatever position the draw- It will be seen,
bench may be located a tube may be rolled therefrom down the skid-rods 9 and along said rods until the tube engages the walls 13 of the respective guide troughs, over which walls it can be rolled into the delivery-Lrough.
Aside from permitting the draw-bench to be located on a higher plane than the delivery-trough, the Construction shown and described permits an unlimited range of movement of the draw-bench toward and from the delivery-trough, the guide-trough opening beneath the delivery-trough, making it possible to project the skid-rod beneath and beyond the delivery-trongh in bringing the draw-bench into close proximity thereto.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In an apparatus of the class described, the combination with a pair of members one movable toward and from the other; of a skid pivotally connected at one end with the movable member; and an open slideway or trough opening beneath the other member and projectiug laterally therefrom toward the movable member, and adapted to receive and guide the other end of said skid, substantially as described. p
2. In a tube-making apparatus, the conibination with the delivery-trough, and the 'draw-bench novable toward and from the same; of a skid pivotally connected at one end with said draw-bench; and a guide-trough for the free end of said skid opening beneath said deiivery-trough and projecting laterally from the top thereof toward the draw-bench, substantially as described.
3; In a tube-making apparatus, the combination with a delivery-trough; and a drawbench adapted to oscillate toward and from, and in a higher plane than, the deliverytrough; of a guide-trough opening at one end beneath the deIivery-trough and projecting laterally from the top thereof toward the draW-bench; and a skid having a universal pivotal connection at one end with the drawbench, and its free end supported by said guide-trough and adapted to play through the open end thereof, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a pair of members one movable toward and from the other; of a skid connected at one end with one of said members, and adapted 'to pass beneath the other member, when the members are brought into proxinity to 'each other; and a guide adapted to support the free end of said skid and direct the same beneath said other member.
In testimony whercof we have he'eunto set our hands this 30th day of August, 1902.
