UNITED STATES PATENT, @FFICE.
STEPHEN o. ATTKISSON,OF SALEM, INDIANA, AssIeNon or SEVEN-EIGHTHS TO DAISY ATTKISSON, or SAME PLACE.
INVALIDS BED.
, SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,514, dated December 14, 1897.
Application filed April 10, 1897. Serial No. 631,522. (No model.)
State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Invalids Bed, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is an invalids bed, by which the invalid may be rested steadily on a bed of usual construction or raised from the bed without disturbing the comfort of the invalid or of exposing the invalid to uneven temperatures.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of my invention, while the claim defines the actual scope of the conception.-
Referenceis to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
' Figure 1 is a perspective View of the invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the head-rest for the invalids bed.
The invention is adapted to be used in connection with an ordinarybedstead; and it consists in a rectangular frame 3, the length of which should be approximately equal to the length of the bed and the width of which may be any to suit the convenience of the patient. At the head of the frame 3 a headframe 4 is pivoted. The head-frame 4 is provided with buttons, to which a canvas sheet 5 may be removably connected. This forms a head-rest for the patient or it may serve to hold a pillow. The frame 4 is held at various inclinations by means of arms 6, respectively engaging ratchet-bars 7, carried at the inner faces 'of the sides of the frame 3 near the head thereof.
The outer face of each side of the frame 3 is provided at each end with a bar 8, said bars being slidable in keepers 9, carried by the frame 3, as indicated in Fig. 1. The bars 8 are movable in and out of prominent position, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, and serve as handles for facilitating the movement of the frame in the manner of a stretcher.
The sides of the frame 3 are provided on their outer face with hooks 10, respectively engaging eyelets 11 in a canvas sheet 12,
'neath the opening 22. sired to perform this operation, a strip 23, of 95 which forms the bottom of the invalids bed. The sheet 12 is removable, if desired, and by its flexible qualities serves to easily support the patient.
The frame 3 is raised and lowered on and off the bed proper by means of a line 13, attached to a winding-drum 14, held off the bed and on a stand 15. The line 13 coacts with a block 16 and fall 17. The fall 17 is attached to a ring 18, and the block 16 is held in the ceiling of the apartment. The ring 18 has a number of lines 19 attached thereto. The lines 19 are preferably six in number and are arranged three for each side rail of the frame 3. If desired, the number and arrangement of the lines 19 may be varied, it being only essential that the frame be evenly supported when raised by the block and fall.
To prevent the sides of the frame from buckling under the pressure of the lines 19 and to hold the canvas sheet 12 taut over the frame, I provide-an arched brace or knee 20, that is provided with notches in its ends, which notches respectively receive the sides of the frame 3, and are removably held thereto by swinging hooks 21, carried on the frame and engaging eyes on the knee. The knee or brace 20 arches up over the sheet 12, so that the patient may lie easily beneath the knee. When the patient is to be placed in or displaced from the bed, the knee may be removed to facilitate this operation. The lines 19 may be attached to the frame 3 by spring snap-hooks arranged to enter eyes on the frame or by an oblong ring screwed into the frame. If desired, any other means may also be used for this purpose.
The sheet 12 has an opening 22 therein, through which the patient may evacuate when the frame 3 is used. When it is desired that this be done, the frame 3 is raised and a bed-pan or'other receptacle placed be- Should it not be de- IOO ment of my invention may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. Hence I consider myself entitled to all such variations as come within the scope of the claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An invalids bed having a frame, hooks secured to the outer faces of the side rails of said frame, a cloth sheet stretched between the lower edges of the frame and having eyelets attached to the hooks thereof, the cloth sheet having an opening therein, a strip of cloth laid against the sheet to close the opening therein and having eyelets receiving the hooks of the frame, a hoisting apparatus in connection with the frame to support the same horizontally, a knee engaging the side rails of the frame and extending upward over the cloth sheet, a head-frame pivoted to the side rails of the frame adjacent to one end of the frame, and an arm pivoted to the headframe and capable of engaging with the main frame to hold the head-frame at various inclinations.
