UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
CHARLES PHILIPPE CHOQUETTE AND ANTOINE MOISE MORIN, OF ST. HYAGINTHE, CANADA.
ACETYLEN E-GAS G EN ERATO R. I
' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,451, dated December 14, 1897.
- Application filed June 11,1896. Serial No. 595,184. (No model.) Patented in England June 13,1896, No. 13,115; in France June 20, 1896,11'0. 244,818, and in Canada February 1Z,1897,No-54,976.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES PHILIPPE GHO UETTE and ANTOINE Mo'IsE MORIN, citizens of the Dominion of Canada, residing at the town of St. Hyacinthe, in the county of 'St. Hyacinthe and Province of Quebec, Oangenerator-that is, one in which the production of the gas is automatically regulated; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully dean outer tank A, having a bottom a, but no top, and into which is placed another tank or holder B, having no bottom, but whose top is formed by means of a separate chamber 0, whose bottom portion 0 is funnel-shaped and is provided with a circular opening at 0 just large enough to smoothly slide along the rod D. This vessel or chamber 0 is also provided with the guide 0 or any other suitable substitute,
so that when the tank B rises it always occupies the same position in the tank A.
Now to put the apparatus in operation water is poured into the bottom of the tank A, by means of the tubea or otherwise, until the required level is reached, which can be seen by a suitable water-gage a However,
in doing this the air contained in the vessel B is compressed, so that by opening a valve placed on the outlet-pipe 0 (not shown on the drawing) this air escapes by passing through the pipe 0 which is provided with a checkvalve, (not shown on the drawing,) so as to allow no vapor of water to get into the chamber O. This being done and a certain amount of pulverized or granulated carbid of calcium being put into the funnel 0', when held up by means of the rings K or otherwise, through the opening E, which is closed by a suitable stopper, the operation at once begins on unhooking the rings K, for then a certain amount falls down through the opening 0 which, when the tank B is down, as shown on the drawing, is opposite the conical end (1 of the rod D and is consequently open. However, as the production of gas takes place the pressure in the tank B runs up, and when the production is more than the demand the pressure runs up enough to force the water up between the tanks A and B, as shown, and at a given moment raises the tank B. However, when this happens the opening 0 comes opposite the cylindrical portion of the rod or stopper D, and no more carbid of calcium is supplied, thus stopping all production of gas, for as the chemical is put into the water when in a highly subdivided state its decomposition is almost instantaneous on reaching the water, so that the stopping of the supply stops the production of the acetylene. As the gas passes out through the pipe 0 into the chamber 0, and from thence to the point of consumption through the pipe C, it comes into contact with the pulverized carbid of calcium F and is thus completely dried of all its entrained water, as the cal-bid of calcium is highly hygrometric. When the pressure runs down, the tank B falls, and again the carbid of calcium pours down through the opening 0 as it comes opposite the cone (1, and a new quantity of gas is made, the operation continuing as before The rod or stopper D is held in position by any suitable means; but it is joined to the bottom of the tank A by means of a small rod d, passing through the bottom a, where it is provided with a thumb-screw d so as to regulate the height of the rod or stopper D. This small rod cl is also provided with a shoulder ical is not mixed up with the residue of the decomposition and the water.
The top of the apparatus is made heavy enough to maintain a suitable pressure in the holder B when the provision of the pulverized or granulated carbid of calcium is about run out.
Having described our invention, .what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
In an acetylene-gas generator, the combination, of an outer tank to contain water in the bottom, means for introducing this water, a small rod (1 surmounted by a larger rod or stopper D having its point of junction with the rod (1 conical in shape, means for regulating the length of the whole, and secured to its bottom, and means for regulating the amount of rise of the inner tank with an inward tank or holder having its top formed by means of a tank or chamber to contain the pulverized or granulated carbid of calcium, and having a funnel-shaped bottom provided with an opening at its lower extremity, of just suliicient size to freely slide over the rod or stopper D, means of introducing the carbid of calcium into the funnel-shaped chamber, means for the escape of the gas to the point of consumption, and means to guide the inward tank or holder into the outward tank, substantially as described, and for the purposes set forth. v
In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
