JAMES Moxon soHoFIELD, on sTocKToN, CALIFORNIA.
AcTYLENE-GAS GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATIO forming part of Letters Patent No. 629,701, dated July 25, 1899.
Application filed July 14, 1898. Serial No. 685,919. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES MoxoN SoHo- FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene-Gas Generators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to acetylene-gas generators; and the object is to provide'a simple, safe, compact, and comparatively automatic generator of this class for domestic purposes.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved acetylene-gas generator. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same.
1 represents the tank, which is formed with a tapering bottom 2, from the lowermost point of which a lateral pipe 3 connects with a vertical pipe 4, which terminates in'a valve 5'for conveniently drawing off a portion of the wa.
ter in the tank when desired.
6 represents the outlet-pipe, from the lower end of which the connection is made with the service-pipe for the consumption of the gas.
7 denotes the inlet-pipe, leading from the generator-chamber 8, and it is provided with a check-valve 9 and a plug-cock 10, the stern of which carries a bifurcated lever 12. A pipe 13 extends from the lower part of the tank 1 up through the bottom of the chamber 8, and it is provided with ahand-valve 14. for controlling the flow of water from the tank to the carbid-chamber. The bottom 15 of the chamber 8 is also conical or concave, so that the spent residue may be discharged through the outlet-pipe 16. Y
17 represents the gas-holder, which has a vertical movement in the tank, its upper end being provided with guide-rollers 18 1S, which traverse the vertical guide-rods 19, fixed to the tank.
2O 2O denote a series of removable Weights which may be increased or diminished at will to control the pressure of the gas in the holder.
21 represents the flaring spout or mouth by means of which the tank is supplied with wa-v ter, and 22 denotes a rod depending from the top of the gas-holder and terminating in a coupling 23, in which is secured the upper end of the valve-rod 24C, the lower end of which is turned outwardly to form the arm 25, which engages the bifurcated end of the lever 12.
26 represents the removable cap or cover of the chamber 8,'which is secured in place by means of the clamp 27 and thumb-screw 28.
29 denotes the foraminous carbid cage, which is provided at its upper end with a folding bail for conveniently removing and replacing it in the generator.
The operation is as follows: Water is first placed in the tank to the level indicated and a suitable charge of calcio carbid placed in the cage, which is then inserted in the generator-chamber 8. The valve 14. is now opened to admit a sufficient amount of Water from the tank to the chamber 8, which, coming in contact with the carbid, immediately starts the generation of the gas, which passes through the pipe 7 into the holder 17, from whence it is carried out for. consumption through the service-pipe 6. As the holder rises under the iniiuence of the gas the arm 25 engages the bifurcated end of thelever 12, thereby closing the valve 10 and preventing the passage of the gas from the generating-chamber through the pipe 7 into theholder. Anyfurthergeneration of gas will force the water in the lower part of the chamber ont through the pipe 13 and into the tank, and thereby check the generation of the gas. As soon as sufficient gas has been withdrawn from the holder to permit it to fall until the arm 25 has opened the valve 10 the communication is restablished between the generator and the holder and the Water in the tank flows through the pipe 13 into the ,chamber 8,where it again starts the gas generating,
as inthe first instance.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
The combination with the tank, the holder mounted within the tank, the rod 22 fixed to said holder and terminating in the coupling 23, a set-screw carried by said coupling the Valve-rod 24 having its upper end adjustably` secured in said coupling, and its lower end terminatingin the lateral arm 25, of the generator-chamber, the pipe 7 connecting said chamber and tank and provided with the valve 10, and the bifureated lever 12 carried by said valve and adapted to ooaot with the lateral arm on said valve-rod, substantially I5 as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
JAMES MOXON S'CHOFIELD.
