SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,431, dated December 14, 1897. Application filed May 8, 1897. Serial No. 635,6 79. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WARREN J. BALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new .and useful Improvements in Riveting-Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the numerals of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a perspective view showing two pieces of material placed in position to be riveted. Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a bottom or under side view of the housing or head. Fig. 4is a detached view of the plunger. Fig. 5 is a detached view showing a portion of the pivotedhandle. Fig. 6 is a sectional view showing the plunger lowered and also showing a portion of the pivoted handle. Fig. 7 is a view showing two pieces of material properly riveted together. Fig. 8 is a detached view of the rivet.
The present invention has relation to riveting-tools; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar numbers of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawlugs.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 represents the housing or head, which head is provided with the integral handle 2 and arm 3', said parts being located and arranged substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1. The head 1 is provided with the grooves or ways 4, which may be located substantially as shown or they may bedifierently located, as their only object and purpose is to provide guides for the plunger-head 5. The plunger-head 51is provided with the flanges 6, which flanges fit into the grooves or ways 4, it being understood that the flanges 6 are to correspond in shape and size with the grooves or ways 4 without reference to any particular location of said parts. The plunger-head 5 is provided with the parallel flanges 7 and 8, which flanges are set a short distance apart for the purpose of a. J V A providing a space to receive the end of the handle 9, the inner end of said handle being provided with the rounded end 10, which rounded end is formed of a size to correspond substantially with the distance between the flanges 7 and 8, by which arrangements the movement of the plunger-head and its plunger 11 is positive, or, in other words, the connection being such that there is no lost motion between the plunger-head and the pivoted handle 9. By providing the flanges 7 and 8 and locating the head or rounded end 10 between said flanges the force of the handle 9 will be directly below the plunger 11.
The upper portion of the head 1 is provided with the aperture 12, through which aperture the plunger 11 is passed, said aperture being of such a length with reference to the length of the plunger 11 that when the pivoted handie 9 is moved away from the handle 2 to its full'limit, or substantially so, the top or upper end of the plunger 11 will be a sufficient distance below the upper end of the aperture 12 to receive the rivet 13, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 6, and when the rivet 13 is placed in the position shown in Fig. 6 it can be forced from the aperture 12, as hereinafter described.
The arm 3 may be substantially of the form shown in the drawings, audits end is provided with the screw-threaded aperture 14, through which aperture the die 15 is passed, said die being provided with a screw-threaded portion, which is for the purpose of providing proper'adjustment for the die 15, as it will be understood that when the die 15 is rotated in one direction it will be moved away from the head 1 and when turned in the opposite direction it will be brought toward said head, thereby regulating the space between the upper end of the head and the lower end of the die.
For the purpose of providing a rivetingtool that can be placed upon any smooth surface, such as a table or bench, and at the same time properly supported the head 1 is provided with the lateral flanges 16 and the rest 17, which rest is preferably formed integral with the handle 2, said rest being formed of such a length that it will hold the riveting-tool in substantially a horizontal position.
It will be understood that the tool herein described can be operated without placing it upon any support, inasmuch as it is formed light and can be held in the hand of the operator without any inconvenience, and is designed so to be used when it is to be employed in mending harness or articles that cannot be conveniently placed upon a table or bench at the time the tool is being used.
In use it frequently happens that straps are to be riveted or connected together that cannot be conveniently placed upon a bench, and it is upon such occasions that the tool is to be used without any reference to its being placed upon a bench or table.
For the purpose of providing a means for pivotally connecting the lever or handle 9 the cross-bolt 18 is provided, which is extended through the head 1, as illustrated in the drawings.
It will be understood that the particular shape of the head may be dispensed with without departing from the nature of my invention, inasmuch as it is immaterial as to the particular shape of the head, except that it should be so formed that it will properly guide and hold the plunger and at the same time be so arranged that the lever 9 can be connected with said plunger.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the housing or head 1, provided with the integral handle 2, the plunger-head 5 provided with the guidefianges 6, and the parallel flanges 7 and 8, the pivoted handle 0, having its inner end loosely located between the flanges 7 and 8, ways formed in the housing, the plunger 11 located above the inner end of the handle 9, and the arm 3 provided with an adjustable die, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the housing I, having located therein the plunger-head 5, said plunger-head guided in the grooves or Ways 4 and flanges 6, the flanges 7 and 8 formed upon the head 5, the plunger 11 located above the head 5, the pivoted handle 9 loosely connected to the head 5 between the flanges 7 and 8 and below the plunger 11 and an arm provided with an adjustable die, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
