W. HARGROVE.
DOOR SPRING.
No. 595,245. Patented Dec. 7, 1897.
m m-j? Q GWZZWM UNiTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
lVILLIAM IIARGROVE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DOOR-SPRING.
$PECIFIGA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,245, dated December 7, 1897.
Application filed June 7,1897. Serial No. 639,769. (No model.) 1
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HARGROVE, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Impro veinentin Door-Springs,whereof the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in door-springs.
Figure 1 represents an elevation of a door and easing embodying my improved doorspring. Fig. 2 is a section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a de tail view of the arm and lever. Fig. 4. is a detail view of bracket, ratchet, and lever.
As shown in the drawings, the bracket C is adapted to be secured to a door-jamb by means of screws and is provided on its under side with ratchet-teeth c and a depending lug c.
A indicates a coiled spring, the upper coils of which embrace the lug o.
a is a part of a coil of the spring showing lever.
a is an arm which extends outwardly from the uppermost coil of the spring A and is bent back upon itself, thereby forming a spring-lever, the upper arm of which rests upon the upper face of the bracket C, while the lower arm engages the ratchet-teeth c on the under side thereof.
The arm a of the spring A is shown as sooured to the door-casing D by an eyelet cl, and on the end of said arm 60 1s a sharp point d, which is driven into the casing D to hold the arm in proper position and keep it from slipping through the eyelet (Z.
The novelty of this invention consists in the construction of the device whereby it is operated without the aid of a wrench or pins. By raising or lowering with the hand the lever in ratchet-teeth c a positive actionis given to wind up coil-sprin g Aand give it the proper tension to close a door equally small or large.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a door and its casing, of a bracket adapted to be secured to the door and provided 011 its under side with ratchet-teeth and a depending lug, a coilspring, the upper coils embracing said lug, and having an arm extended outwardly from the uppermost coil and bent upon itself to form a spring-lever, one arm of which rests upon the upper face of the bracket, the other arm engaging the ratchet-teeth, and means for securing said spring to the door-casing, consisting of the arm a extended outwardly from the lowermost coil thereof and having an eyelet d, secured in the casing, and through which said arm may be passed and held in place, substantially as shown and described.
XVILLIAM I-IARGROVE.
