SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,235, dated December '7, 1897. Application filed February 5,1897. Serial No. 622,113. (No model.)

Be it known that I, EDWARD S. AMROOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at WValtham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Nurseries, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.

The object of my invention is to produce a portable nursery that can be arranged in any room or apartment, so that a child placed therein will be safe and cannot soil the floor with crumbs and the like.

The invention consists of a frame hinged and pivoted together, so that it can be readily opened out or folded up, to which frame is attached canvas sides, to the lower edges of which is secured a canvas bottom intended to rest upon the floor, the frame being supported by cords attached thereto and passed over a hook or hooks, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a portable nursery embodying my invention.

Fig. 2 is a vertical section of same. Fig. 3 is a view of the frame expanded. Fig. 4 is a view of the frame partially folded. Fig. 5 is a view of the frame entirely folded.

The frame consists of two rigid bars or pieces of wood A A and two side bars or pieces A A, each jointed in its center and connected by a hinge B on the under side, so that said bars can be folded by raising the central portion, as shown in Fig. 4. The bars A and A are pivoted together at their ends, as shown, by means of rivets or bolts 1), so that after the side bars A have been folded, as shown in Fig. 4, they can be turned down, so as to lie between the bars A, as shown in Fig. 5. Thus the whole frame is brought into a small and compact space.

To the bars of the frame is secured canvas or other suitable material to form the sides or walls 0 of the nursery, and to the lower edges of said sides or walls is secured a canvas bottom D.

I prefer toform pockets 0 in the upper edge of the canvas sides or walls 0, into which the bars A A, forming the frame, are inserted; but said canvas sides or walls might be attached by nails or in any other convenient manner.

The two bars A are formed with holes a, through which are passed the ends of ropes E, which are knotted or otherwise secured 011.

the under side of said bars, so that by said ropes the nursery can be supported from a hook or hooks in the ceiling or wall of any room or apartment.

It will be seen that if a child is placed in a portable nursery constructed as described it cannot get out, be injured, or soil the carpet with crumbs, &c. It can hold onto the frame to prevent it falling and can walk around the inside of same. It will also be seen that the nursery can be readily and easily folded and removed and as easily set up in another place, the only thing required being a hook or hooks to support same.

I prefer to make the canvas side walls, say, about two feet deep, and if a very small child is to be placed in the portable nursery then the ropes or hooks can be adjusted so thatthe side walls will be of the height desired. The canvas side walls would'then be slightly but not inconveniently baggy.

lVhat I claim is- As a new article of manufacture a portable nursery consisting of a frame having two rigid bars and two bars hinged in the center, a square canvas bag or receptacle having a square bottom to rest upon the floor, the upper ends of the bag or receptacle having pockets to receive the bars of the frames, and ropes secured to the rigid bars for supporting the nursery from a hook or hooks substantially as set forth.
