SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,194, dated December '7, 1897.

Be it known that I, hIARTIN C. NEUNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Index Books, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to a double-index book having an improved index whereby the method of finding both the surname and first name is readily accomplished; and my invention consists in certain features of novelty hereinafter described and claimed.

Figure I represents my improved doubleindex record-book opened at the first page, showing the surname main index in the lower right-hand margin and the first-name subindex surmounting it in the upper right-hand margin. Fig. II represents the book opened at the initial letters Ca.of the surname main index, the leaves being turned over to the initial letters M. N. of the first-name subindex.

My double-index book is provided with signatures having leaves on each of which is printed a series of vertical columns for the date when recorded, the surname, the first or Christian name, the residence, and where re corded, all in the order mentioned.

Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the lower main index in double column containing combination of letters and abbreviations pertaining to the surname, there being a number of pages under each of said letters and abbreviations. The list of letters and abbreviations referring to the surname takes up the major portion of the right-hand margin of the index, its length gradually decreasing toward the back of the book as the leaves are turned.

2 represents an upper subindex in double column containing combination of letters and abbreviations which pertain to the first or Christian name, said subeombination occupying the space on the right-hand margin of the book above the combination of letters and abbreviations which refer to the surname. The double column of the first-name subindex is orial No. 601,441. (No model.)

in alinement with the double column of the surname main index, so as to be readily accessible at the right-lntnd side or book-opening. The leaves are preferably reinforced by leather tabs, as shown at 3, having the initial letters and combinations referring to the surname printed thereon. The letters and combinations referring to the first or Christian name are preferably printed upon the leaves themselves, as shown in the upper portion of the right-hand margin.

The combination 2, referring to the first or Christian name, is subdivided a number of times, as shown in Fig. I, said combination appearing in full as each of the combinations or initial letters are turned to in the surname-for instance, if it is desired to find the name of Calvin with the Christian name Norman P. I first turn to the abbreviation Ca. for the surname and then turn to the abbreviations M. N. for the Christian name, as seen in Fig. II. I thus have all the names coming under the abbreviations Ca. and all the Christian names or first names of corporations, &c., coming under the letters M. N, both openings of the book being rapidly accomplished by the same hand with-- out changing the point of vision except to glance higher up on the margin. It will be understood that there areas many leaves coming under Ca. as there are divisions of the first or Christian names in the upper portion of the margin, each successive leaf which, for instance, comes under Ca. having the letters Ca. printed upon it until all of the leaves of the subcombination 2, or, in other words, of the Christian name or first name of the corporation, &c., have been turned. Of course where the index is larger there can be a greater number of divisions of the initial letters and abbreviations without departing from the spirit of my invention.

In using my index, taking, for instance, the surname California and in the subcombination the letter M, all corporations or private names coming under M will be found on one page, while, for instance, corporations or private names coming under S, such as Southern California, will be found on the page in which the letter S is shown in the right-hand margin of the subcombination. This avoids the intermixing of Christian names or first names of corporations, as appears in the indexes now in use and which causes so much annoyance and loss of time incidental to looking over several pages of names in which, although the surname or last name of the corporation may be the same, the Christian name or first name of the corporation is different. There there are a great many entries under one name-say, for instance, Calif0rnia1 provide anumber of extra pages at the back, as shown at 4, and have blank spaces at the bottom of the page, as shown at 5, preceded by the words Continued to page, whereby such a name under which there would be numerous entries may be transferred to extra pages of their own at the back of the book.

I claim as my invention A double-index book comprising leaves; each having printed thereon vertical columns for the date when recorded, for the surname,

for the first or Christian name, for the rest dence, and for where recorded, all in the order named, a surname main index having divisions arranged in double vertical columns on the right-hand margin of each of the leaves commencing in front at a point near the upper part of the leaves and extending downward 'on the succeeding leaves to the back leaf, and the series of first or Christian name subindexes each having divisions arranged in double vertical columns on the right-hand margins of the leaves in alinement with the columns of the surname main index commencing at the upper part of the leaves of each series and extending downward; a series of first or Christian name subindeX-leaves being arranged in front of each divisional leaf of the surname main index and each one of the leavesof each series having located thereon the abbreviation of the divisional leaf the series of leaves represents; substantially as described.
