SAMUEL PLES LOYD, OF ASOALON, GEORGIA.
EVAPORATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,186, dated December 7', 1897.
Application filed July 1, 1897. Seria1N0-643,127. (N0 model.)
To (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL PLES LoYD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ascalon, in the county of alker and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Evaporators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in evaporators, and especially to the provision of a pan and boiler drier comprising, in connection with a suitable metallic casing, a boiler through which a vertically-disposed heat and smoke pipe passes, from which heat is imparted to the water in the boiler and is deflected against suitable trays designed to hold the material to be dried.
A further part of my invention resides in the provision of a pan and boiler drier designed to be set over a fire with a suitable water-tank open at its upper end and through the central portion of which the smoke-pipe is adapted to pass and in which pipe is located a regulatingvalve, it being my purpose to utilize both the heat of radiation from the smoke-pipe as well as the steam in the drying of the material held on the trays, a suitable space being left between the rear edges of the trays and the smoke-pipe to allow for the escape of the steam from the boiler.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this application, and in which drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of a heater constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the drier on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Reference 110w being had to the details of the construction by letter, A designates the outer casing of the drier, made of sheet-iron or other suitable material. At the lower portion of the casing is a boiler or tank B, and a smoke-pipe 0 passes through said boiler, the latter having its upper end opened for the purpose of allowing steam to escape and come in contact with the series of horizontally-arranged trays D, each tray being held in suitable guide-strips at the ends of the casing, and their inner ends designed to abut against strips E, mounted in the casing, with a suitable distance intervening between the same and the Wall of the metallic chimney, through which steam is allowed to pass after coming from contact with the under surface of the trays.
Directly over each tray is an inclined partition F, secured at its rear end to the said strip E, with its outer end fastenednear the front edge of the immediate tray above, thus allowing any moisture arising from the material being dried to freely escape.
Located within the smoke-pipe is a regulating-damper H, whereby the supply of heat which it is desired to direct through the pipe may be regulated.
It is my purpose to have a series of trays open on their upper sides arranged one above another and on opposite sides of the smokeplpe.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pan and boiler drier comprising in combination with the casing having a boiler at its lower portion, the upper end of which is open, the smoke-pipe running centrally and vertically through the boiler, the regulating-damper in the said smoke-pipe, the trays sliding on guide-pieces, the abutting strips, limiting the inner movement of the trays, and located with a space intervening between same and the smoke-pipe, and the inclined partitions between the trays, all arranged substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL PLES LOYD.
Witnesses:
