STATION-INDICATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,138, dated December '7, 1897.
Application filed February 20, 1897. Serial No. 624,480. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, ADOLPH BLACK and LUTHER E. GREGORY, citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Station-Indicators, of which the following is a specification.
By means of this invention streets or stations-snch as those being approached, for example, by a car or conveyance-can be indicated automatically or have their designations exposed to view of passengers; and the invention relates to novel arrangements by which practically uniform and accurate actuation of the indicating-strip can be secured, as also to other features set forth in the followingspecificationand claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a sectional side elevation of a station-indicator. Fig. 2 is a sectional front elevation of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail side view of a reversing gear or train in different position than in Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a plan view of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 shows a driving mechanism for the worm-shaft.
A casing or box U, adapted to be secured at a suitable place, as inside a railroad-car, has a sight or openingV .for exposing to view the required station or information on the traveling strip K. Into this box U extends a rotary worm-shaft O, actuated by suitable gearing or connection, as with a car-wheel or auxiliary wheel. This worm-shaft C rotates gear E on shaft D, and gear F is connected to or rotates with gear E.
On shaft D swings the arm R of a reversing gear or mechanism, said arm R carrying a rotary gear G, meshing with gear F. To arm R is jointed a link l, jointed to a link 2, having a pivot or support 3 on a side or suit able part of the case U. The links l and 2 form what may be called a toggle-joint. At the joint of links l and 2 is mounted the rotary gear II, meshing with gear G. The arm R projects through a slot or opening Y in the case, and by swinging arm R to the position shown in Fig. l gear His made to mesh with gear I to rotate the latter in one direction. The gear G is now out of mesh with gear I. YVhen the arm R is moved to the position shown in Fig. 3, the wheel H is moved out of mesh with gear I and the gear G is moved into mesh with gear I, so that the latter is rotated in the opposite direction, gear H now running idle. By moving arm R to a position intermediate between that shown in Figs. l and 3, so that both gears G and H are out of mesh with gear I, the latter is left to stand still.
The gear I is fixed to shaft A, to which is fixed a driving-drum J, and gear I meshes with gear L, fixed to shaft 5, to which is fixed a smoothing-drum O. The drums J O, rotating at equal circumferential speeds, feed the strip K in one direction or another.
The driving-gear I meshes into gear M, which in its turn meshes with gear N, so that gears M and N rotate in opposite directions. These gears M and N are mounted loosely on shafts t3 and 7, and each gear has fixed thereto an eccentric stud 8 and 9, to each of which is fixed an end of a coiled spring, as 10 and ll, respectively, having their other ends fixed to shafts 6 and 7. To these shafts 6 and 7 are fixed the drums P and Q, on one of which the strip K is wound while unwinding from the other, and vice versa.
The springs 10 and 1l, it is noticed, coil about the shafts 6 and 7 in the same direction, while the gears M and N rotate in opposite directions. The strip K passes over guide-roller T in traveling to or from drum P.
To make the strip travel in the direction of arrow l2, Fig. l, the drum P, with gear N, r0- tates in the direction of arrow 13, and the drum Q, with gear M, rotates in the direction of arrow 14. This rotation of gear N tends to cause an unwinding or slackening of the spring ll, so as to ease the delivery of ribbon K from the drum P, while the rotation of gear M tends to wind up or tighten spring lO to cause an efficient take-up of ribbon K by drum Q.
When gears G and H are out of mesh with gear I, the drum J, with strip K, can be set or adjusted by crank or handle S, Fig. 2.
The drum or rollers P and Q may be considered carrying-rollers, since they carry or support the strip or ribbon K in readiness to be delivered to or taken from roller or driving-drum J.
J ointed to reversing-arm R at 16, Figs. l
and 3, is an arm 17, the free end of which is forked to straddle shaft 5, as seen in Fig. 3. Said free or forked end is cam-shaped, having its central part 18 high or wide, as seen in Fig. 4, and narrowing to the end portions 19. These cam portions 18 19 as the arms R and 17 are shifted move back and forth in the groove or way 2O of the friction-disk 21, sitting loosely on shaft 5, but prevented from turning-as, for example, by the engagement of cam part 18 into said groove 20. When the arm R is shifted to one extremity oranother of its throw, one or another of the low cam parts 19 is between the disk 2l and the collar 22, sitting loosely on shaft 5 and eX- posed to the action or pressure of spring 23. Vhen, however, the arm R is in intermediate position to hold both the gears G and-H out of mesh with gear l, the high part 18 of the cam 18 19 is moved between the col1ar 22 and the disk or brake 21, so as to press the latter against gear L and prevent the latter, with drum O and strip K, as also drum J, from moving. The strip K is also thus guarded against accidental displacement or shifting.
The pin or fulcrum 24 supports a handle or lever 25, sufficiently loose or free to allow this leverv to be moved for taking or moving the spring-pressed collar 22 away from cam part 18 when said cam, with arm R, is in middle or intermediate position, if the gear L is at such time to be temporarily freed, as when setting by the handle or crank S. The handle 25 projects out through a slot or opening 26 in case U, so as to be conveniently reached.
The shaft 4 is shown supporting swinging arms 27 concentrically with the driving-drum, Figs. 2 and 3, said arms carrying spring-boxes for the shaft 5 of drum O, so. that the latterV is held in proper contact with the drum J or strip K.
The shaft C is shown actuating a gear 28, Fig. 1, having an eccentric or crank pin 29, reciprocating link 30, jointed to arm 31, swinging on shaft 32. This arm 31 carries a paWl 33, engaging ratchet 34 to rotate the latter with shaft 32. This shaft 32 being given a step-by-step or gradual rotation is made to successively expose leaves or advertising faces 35 through sight V". The ratchet 34 can be secured against retrograde motion by a stop-pawl 36, or said stop-pawl may form or be part of a hammer or sounding device for announcing an actuation of the advertising device.
The gears F and I may be considered actuating or driving gears, having the interposed pair of connecting-gears G and H.
By having the slot 2O deepened toward the periphery of disk 21, the cam part 18 enters such deepened slot part when said cam-is in releasing position and enablesl the disk or brake to move from gear L to free the latter,
While, when in central position and pressing on the high or central part of slot 20, the cam 18 holds the brake 2l in action, or in place of the slot 2O being curved the face of collar 22,
shifted. ample, run around a loop to shift to the return-track, the reversing-gear will have to be shifted by lever R.
vice or leaves will always be moved forward.
If the car at the end of the trip is not turned around, so that on the return trip the end of Athe car which before was the rear end now for-ms the front end, the arm R need not be lf, however, the car should, for eX- What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent', is-
