Our invention relates to stenographic writing machines and particularly to a ribbon feed and reverse for such machines.

he operation of the ribbon reversing mechanism is as follows: 1t will be noted that in Fig. 4 the ribbon 12 has been entirely unwound from spool 6, the cam 22 has been shifted out of engagement with the pawls 8, 13 so that said pawls are imelled by their springs into engagement with the ratchet wheel 7 and the 13 have been thrown out of engagement with the ratchet wheel 7 by the shifting of the cam 22- so that the next operation of the striking mechanism will rotate the spool 6 in the direction of the arrow. lVhile the ribbon was being unwound from spool 6 and lever up to the point when said ribbon was fully unwound, the parts were in the position shownv in Fig. 1. As the unwinding of the ribbon is fully completed,the dog 17 is impelled by its spring into the notch 18 and the 14 is thereby `shifted to the position shown in Fig. 4. During the shifting of the lever 14 the lug 26 thereon, moving rearwardly, sets up a compression in the spring 29 which in turn exerts a pressure against the button 27 and thereby forces the arm 25 rearwardly. The arm 25 carries the lever 19 rearwardly until the projection 31 on the dog 30 enters the notch 32. The lever 19 shifts the cam 22 into inoperative position and the cam 22 into operative position; the pawls 8, 13 thereby fall into operative position and the pawls 8', 13 are held in in operative position as shown in Fig. 4. The spool 6 is therefore in position to drive.
After the ribbon 1nas been entirely Afed onto the spool 6 through the medium of the feed mechanism heretofore described, the dog, 17 enters the recess 13', lever i4 is thereby shifted into the position shown in Fig. 1, the lug 26 moving forwardly with said lever 14 sets up a compression in the spring 28 which, bearing against the Lip-- A coiled spring 33 y pawls 8',
means actuated turned portion 24, shifts the lever 19 into the position shown in Fig; 1, and the projection 31 isthereby forced out of the notch 32' and enters the notch 32', and the parts are thereby-retained in the position shown in Fig. 1 during. the feed of theribbon from 6 to spool 6. It will be seen that when the vlever 19 has-been shifted to the position shown in Fig. 1, the cam 22 is thrown into inoperative position and the'pawls 8', 13 are allowed toassume their normal positions in engagement with the ratchet wheel 7', so that the spool 6 is adjusted to drive.
lt is to be understood that the form of our invention illustrated and described is merely for purpose of exemplification and that we contemplate any variations in construction within the scope of the following claims. We claim:
1. A ,ribbon reversing mechanism comprising a pair of spools provided with recesses in the hubs thereof and a ribbon connected thereto, means for driving said spools, a pair of dogs adapted to alternately enter said recesses, a pair of coiled springs, means connected with said dogs for alternately setting up compression inv said springs, and means actuated by the ycompressed springs for alternately shifting the drive of said spools.
2,. A ribbon reversing mechanism comprising a pair of spools having a ribbon connected thereto, means for driving said spools, a pair of cams adaptedv to throw said driving means into and out of engagement` with said spools, aidouble-armed lever connected to said cams, a pair of coiled springs, mechanism connected with said spools and with said lever for alternately compressing said springs when the ribbon is alternately unwound from said spools, and by the compressed springs for alternately shifting said cams.
3. A ribbon reversing mechanism comprising a pair of spools provided with recesses in the hubs nected thereto, means for driving said spools, a pair of dogs adapted to alternately enter said recesses, a pair of cams adapted to throw said driving means into and out of engagement with said spools, a double-armed lever connected to said cams, a pair of coiled springs, means connected with said dogs and with said lever for `compressing said springs when the ribbon is alternately unwound from said spools and means actuated by the compressed springs for alternately shifting said cams.
A ribbon reversingl mechanism comprising a. pair of spools provided with recesses in the hubs thereof and a ribbon connected thereto, a pair of dogs adapted to alternately enter said recesses, a `pair coiled springs, a double-armed lever connected with said dogs and adapted to althereof and a ribbon conternately compress said springs and means actuated by the compressed springs for alternately shifting the drive of said spools.

A ribbon reversing mechanism comprisingv a pair of spools provided with recesses in thehubs thereof and a ribbon connected thereto, a pair of dogs adapted to alternately enter said recesses, means for driving said spools, a pair of cams adapted to throw said driving means into and out of engagement with said spools, a double-armed lever connected with said cams, 'a pair of coiled springs connected with said double-armed lever, a second double-armed lever connected with said dogs and adapted to alternately means actuated by the compressedfsprings for alternately shifting said cams.

A ribbon reversing mechanism comprising a pair of spools provided with recesses in the hubs thereof and a ribbon connected thereto, a pair of dogs adapted to alternately enter said recesses, means for driving said spools, a pair of cams adapted' to throw said riving means into and out of engagement with said-spools, a double-armed lever connected with said cams, said lever being provided with an extension, a

7. A ribbon feed and reversing mechavnism comprising, in combination with a universal bar, a pair of levers engaging said ar, a. pair of actua-ting pawls pivotally inounted on said levers, 'a pair of ratchet wheels normally engaged by said pawls, a rotate with said nected thereto, a pair of alternately setting up compression in said springs when the ribbon 'is alternately unwound from-said spools, and cams actuated by the compressed springs for alternately throwing said pawls into and out of enga-gement with said ratchet wheels.

A ribbon feed and reversing mechanism, comprising, in combination with a universal bar, horizontally-oscillating levers engaging said universal bar, pawls actuated by said levers, ratchet wheels actuated byv said pawls, ribbon reels mounted to rotate with oscillating lever said lever, a second oscillating said ratchet wheels and provided with notches, pawls for engaging said notches, a centrally-pivoted leveri having two arms and carrying said last-mentioned pawls, a second centrally pivoted yrlever, `springs for y from the first-named transmitting energ to the last-named centrally-pivoted lever centrally-pivoted lever, notches in saidv lastnamed centrally-pivoted lever, a dog for engaging said notches, and cams'actuated by said last-named centrally-pivoted lever.
9. A ribbon feed and reversing mechanism comprising, in combination with a universal bar, horizontally-oscillating 'levers carrying pawls and actuated by said bar, ribbon reels actuated by said pawls and provided with notches, a centrally-pivoted lever carrying means for engaging said notches, a second centrally-pivoted -lever carrying means for engaging said firstnamed centrally-pivoted lever, and cams oscillated horizontally by said, second-named lever.

A ribbon feed and reversing mecha.- nisin comprising reels, means for revolving said reels, a centra-lly-pivoted, horizontally actuated by said reels, a second oscillating lever, spring for actua-ting said second lever, said springs being actuated by said first lever, and means actuated by said second lever for engaging and diseiigaging said reel revolving means.

A ribbon feed and reversing mechanism comprising reels and means for revolving said reels, an oscillating lever actuated by said reels, springs actuated by said level', an oscillating lever actuated by said springs, a bar having notches, pawl for engaging said notches, said bar having a. substantially straight surface between said notches whereby said bar may move easily when said pawl is forced out of one of said notches.

A ribbon feed and reversing mechanism comprising reels, means for revolving saine, an oscillating lever actuated by said reels, springs adapted to be compressed by lever adapted to be actuated by said springs, means for retaining said second lever until one of said springs is sufliciently compressed, horizontally-oscillating cams adapted to move said revolving means into and out of operation, said cams being actuated by said second lever.
