THOMAS ALLEN IIALCOMB, OF NEOSIIEO, KENTUCKY.
SAW-GUIDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,062, dated December 7, 1897.
Application filed May 6, 1897. Serial No. 635,376. (No model.)
To all whom, 2 'nmy concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS ALLEN HAL- COMB, of Neosheo, in the county of Simpson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw- Guides; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to saw-guides, and has for its object to provide an improved form of guide which will be capable of easy adj ustment and will lock itself automatically when so adjusted. Having this object in view, my invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts fully illustrated in the accompanying drawin gs and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a top view of my saw-guide. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail view of the mechanism by which the guide is automatically locked.
The numeral 1 indicates the base of my device, which is provided with slots 2. These slots are adapted to receive securing-bolts, and the heads of said bolts being larger than said slots it is easily comprehended that my device is capable of adjustment upon the saw-frame. An arm 3 is pivoted, as at 1, to the base of my device. This arm is provided with a lateral extension 5. Jaws 6 are attached to the extension 5, being preferably formed integral therewith. Internallythreaded expanded portions 7 are provided at the ends of the jaws. Screw threaded guide-pieces S are held therein. 'Washers 9 are provided on the ends of these guidepieces, and I preferably make these washers of some material that will exert little friction upon the saw-as, for instance, wood fiber. An extension 10 is formed upon the jaws 6 and is provided with an expanded portion 11, having an opening therethrough. This expanded portion is provided with curved sides, as clearly shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. A set-screw 12 passes through extension 10.
The numeral 13 designates a swivel-block having a screw-threaded opening therein, and an adj Listing-bar 1%, provided with a screwthreaded portion 15, extends through the swivel-block 13. The adj usting-bar 14 is further provided with a square portion 16 and a shoulder or collar 17, while 17 a is a washer or collar slidingly mounted upon the bar 1 1 and adapted to be held in its adjusted position by setscrew or analogous means. The adjusting-bar 14 passes through the opening in the expanded portion 11 of the extension 10, and the shoulder 17 and the collar 17 are formed to hold the sides of this expanded portion. A handwheel 18 is held uponthe squared portion of the bar 14, and is provided with a plurality of lugs 10, extending therefrom toward the bar 10. A spring 20, held upon the square portion of the bar, normally holds the handle 18 against one of the shoulders or collars 17 or 17, thus engaging one of the lugs 19 with the set-screw 12. In order to have the means of measuring the amount of adjustment, I provide the plate 21, having a pointer 22 thereon, held upon the base 1. This plate embraces the end of the arm 3, and the pointer extends over a scale 23, formed upon the arm The scale may show by either lineal or circular measure the amount of deflection. Further, the plate 21 has another function in that it serves to guide the bar 3.
In operation, when it is desired to make an adjustment of the guide, the handle 18 is pulled from engagement with the set-screw 12 and the adjusting-bar 14: turned thereby. This will move the arm 3, thus adjusting the guides 8 to any required position with reference to the plane of the saw. It is obvious that as soon as released the lugs upon the handle 18 will be pressed into engagement with the set-screw 12 by the action of the spring 20.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a saw-guide, the combination with a base provided with slots therein, of an arm pivotally attached to said base, jaws formed upon said arm, guide-blocks on the outer ends of said jaws, a swivel-block attached to said base, an extension formed upon said jaws, an adj Listing-screw passing through said swivelblock and said extension, means for operating said screw, and means for locking the same, substantially as described.
2. In a saw-guide, the combination with a base provided with slots therein, of an arm pivotally attached to said base, jaws formed upon said arm, guide-blocks on the outer ends of said jaws, a swivel-block attached to said base, an extension formed upon said jaws, an adj usting-screw passing through said swivelblock and said extension, a handle-wheel held upon said screw, lugs upon said handlewheel, a set-screw extending through the extension of said jaws, and a spring normally holding said lugs in engagement with said set-screw, substantially as described.
3. In a saw-guide, the combination with a base provided with slots therein, of an arm pivotally attached to said base, jaws formed upon saidarm, guide-blocks on the outer ends of said jaws, a swivel-block attached to said base, an extension formed upon said jaws, an adj ustin g-screw passing through said swivel block and said extension, a handle-wheel held upon said screw, lugs upon said handlewheel, a set-screw extending through the extension of said jaws, a spring normally holding said lugs in engagement with said setscrew, and means for measuring the amount of adjustment, substantially as described.
4. In a saw-guide, the combination with a base-plate provided with slots therein, of an arm pivoted to said base-plate, guide-jaws formed upon said arm, extensions formed at the ends of said guide-j aws, guide-blocks passing through said extensions, washers held upon said guide-blocks, an extension formed upon said jaws. provided with an expanded portion having spherical sides and an opening therethrou'gh, a screw passing through the expanded portion of said extension and through said swivel-block, a shoulder and a collar upon said screw adapted to engage the expanded portion of said extension, a handwheel having a plurality of lugs thereon slid- .ably mounted upon said screw, a spring mounted upon said screw to normally hold said lugs in contact with the aforesaid setscrew, and means to measure the amount of adjustment of the arm, substantially as described.
5. In a saw-guide, the combination with a base-plate having slots therein, of an arm pivoted to said base-plate, guide-j aws formed upon said arm, extensions formed at the ends of said guide jaws, guide -blocks passing through said extensions, washers held upon said guide-blocks, an extension formed upon said jaws provided with an expanded portion having spherical sides and an opening therethrough, a set-screw passing through said extension, a screw passing through the expanded portion of said extension and through said swivel-block, a shoulder and a collar upon said screw adapted to engage the expanded portion of said extension, a hand-wheel havingaplurality of lugs thereon slidably mounted upon said screw, a plate extending over on the aforesaid arm attached to said base, a pointer extending from said plate, and a scale formed upon said arm, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribin g )VlDHGSSGS.
