"WILLIAM H. PERKINSON, OF BROOTON, ILLINOIS.
CU LTIVATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,025, dated December 7, 1897.
Application filed January 23,1897. Serial No. 620,359. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, 2115 may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. PERKIN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brocton, in the county of Edgar and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in double-row oultivators, and has more particular relation to cultivators adapted for the attachment of either two or three horses.
The invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l represents a perspective view of the device embodying my invention adjusted for the attachment of two horses. Fig. 2 represents a top plan View of the same adjusted for the attachment of three horses. Fig. 3 represents an enlarged detail perspective view of the double neckyoke, and Fig. 4 represents an enlarged detail perspective view of the same separated to form two single neck-yokes.
A in the drawings represents the wheeled frame or truck of my improved eultivator; B B, the pivoted plows; C, the pivoted doubletree; D D, the singletrees connected thereto; E E, the shafts, and F the neck-yoke. The frame A may be of any desired construction, and the plows B, which are also of any usual construction, are pivotally mounted and supported thereon. These plows are adapted to be supported under spring tension by springs a, secured to said frame or truck and connected to adjustable crank-shafts Z2, mounted upon the respective plows, by chains a. By this means the plows are always supported in position by a yielding and adjustable support. The said crank-shafts h are adjustable in their respective beams by means of nuts b', adapted to screw on the ends of said shafts and bind them firmly upon their respective plows after they have been turned to the desired adjusted position. The doubletree C is pivotally mounted upon the front bar of the frame A and is provided at each end with a screw-eye o and at its center with a plurality of screweyes c c. The vertical singletrees D are mounted, respectively, upon the doubletree C by said screw-eyes c and c', the middle singletree'being connected to its respective eye c" by a double hook c2. The lower end of each of the singletrees D is connected to a suitable apertured ring a2, mounted upon the axle of the truck.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that the draft, whether it be upon two or three of the sin gletrees, will always be equally distributed to the doubletree, so as to cause each animal to pull an equal amount.
The shafts E are each pivotally mounted upon the frame A and pass over the supporting-bar A, upon which the doubletree C is pivoted. Said shafts are secured, respectively, to said bar by bolts e e, that pass through said shafts and through any one of a plurality of apertures a3, formed in the bar A.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that the shafts E may be either brought together at their outer ends or spread apart to permit a horse to be hitched between them by simply moving the bolts e to the different apertures in the bar A'. The said shafts are normally braced in position by guide-rods e', connected thereto and to the axle of the truck. These rods are preferably shifted when the shafts are moved, so as to effectively brace said shafts in their adjusted position. The forward ends of the shafts E when two horses are to be hitched to the plow are secured together by a lateral bolt e2. Said forward ends of the shafts are each provided with a pendent loop e3 for the attachment of the neck-yoke F. This yoke comprises two sectionsff, secured together by a split sleeve f and bolts f2. A portion of said bolts f2 are formed with loop ends f3, whereby said neck-yoke may be attached to the forward ends of the shafts by hook-rings f4.
It will be observed from the above that the neck-yoke when applied in position upon the forward ends of the shafts is adapted to receive the breast or collar strap of a harness, said straps being secured to the respective ends of said yoke by suitable rings f5, secured thereto. Each of said sections f is provided at its middle with a loop f, so that when said sections are taken apart to be used as single IOO tween them. When three horses are used,v
each of the same is hitched to one of the singletrees D, but when only two are used they are hitched to the two outer singletrees D.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that it is simply a matter of a few moments to change the plow for the attachment of either two or three draft-animals and when such change is made that the draft of all of said animals is thrown evenly upon the cultivator-frame by the peculiar arrangement of the doubletrees and singletrees.
I do not care to limit myself to any particular form of wheel-truck or plows, as any well known constructions may be used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`
1. In a cultivator, the combination with the bent axle, of the plows pivotally mounted thereon, springs c secured to the said axle, the crank-arm adjustably held to the plow- 1 stocks, and chain connections between said arms and the springs, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a cultivator, the combination with the bent aXle of the plows, pivoted to said axle, the crank-arms b mounted horizontally in the plow-stocks, adjusting-nuts on the said arms, of the springs a secured at their inner ends to the said axle, and hooked at their free ends, and the chains ct connecting the said hooked ends of the crank-arms, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM H. PERKINSON. Vitnesses:
