. this invention to provide a cheap and eifective device that will remove the bur from pipes of all ordinary sizes, that may be guided accurately while in operation, and that will stand the rough usage comnonly given tools by workmen.
The invention is exemplified in the structure hereinafter described, and it is defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming partof this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of ,a reaner constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on line X in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a View of the reamer with the point thereof presented toward the observer.
The reamer consists of a skeleton frame, cutters in the france, a guide-handle, and a wrench, each of which has peculiarities as follows: A set of three triangularly-disposed ribs 2 project convergingly from the outer edge of the'lower face of a circnlar disk 1, their lower ends meet and merge, as shown at 14, and they are grooved longitudinally in their outer surfaces. A boss 3, square or otherwise prismatic in cross-section, rises rigidly from the center of the upper surface of the disk, and it is bored axially to receive the reduced shaft 6 of the shank 4 of guidehandle 5. These features constitute the frame, and they are preferably embodied all in one casting. The wrench-head 9 is shaped to conform to the prismatic boss 3, over which it fits, as shown in Fig. 1, and it has a suitable handle, as 10. The guide-handle 5 has a shank 4, which extends in line with the axis of the frame, and the lower end of the shank is reduced to form a shoulder and pro-` duce shaft 6. the shaft extends through the wrench-head and through the boss and projects into the space defined by ribs 2. A Washer 8 fits over the doWnward-extended end of shaft 6, and a key 7 is set through the shaft below the Washer and holds the wrench and the guidehandle in operative connection with the frame. A cutterblade 11 is set into the groove of each of the ribs 2 and held therein by means of a split key 13, for instanc-e. The cutters are longer than the ribs, and they eXtend sone little distance below the lower or conjoined ends of the same. The grooves meet at a point in the conjunction of the ribs, and the inner edges of the cutters follow the bottons of the grooves to the meeting-point. From the meeting-point on downward they back one against the other in lines parallel with the axis of the rib-frame, and the contiguous surfaces of the blades each form, in end View, an angle of one hundred and twenty degrees, as shown in Fig. 3. This causes the backs of the lower ends of the blades to nest together 'like hexagonal bodies, and each two form a groove in which the other one is held against lateral displacem ent. The blades are made of steel, their sides are parallel for a distance corresponding to the length of the ribs, their cutting edges are beveled to present sharper surfaces to the work, and the eXtending ends 12 are cut away to increase the abru ptness of the taper of the cutter taken as a whole.
In operation the guide-handle is grasped by the left hand, the wrench-handle is held by the right hand, and the cutter blades are inserted into an end of a pipe. v The guidehandle is then held in such manner that the aXis of the cutter shall coincide with the aXis of the pipe, slight pressure is applied, and the wrench is swung back and forth in an arc of at least one-third of a circle.
The cutter-blades are applicable to a Very small pipe, the guide-handle in line with the axis of the cutting-frame enables the device to be accurately operated, the triangular arrangement of the ribs permits access to the lower end of shaft 6, and the use of three cutters insures the operation of each under all circumstances.
By making the device of malleable iron stability and durability to a high degree may IOO be attained, there are no delicate parts to break or become detached and mislaid, and the expense of Construction is small.
hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A pipe-reaner consisting of a disk, a set of grooved rbs converging from a side of the disk and nerging one into the other, a prismatic boss extending from the center of the disk on the side opposite the ribs, a Wrench fitting onto the boss, a guide-shaft extended through the boss and into the space defined bythe ribs, a fastening on the guideshaft in the space defined by the ribs, and cutter-blades in the grooves of the ribs, substantially as set forth.

A tapered pipo-reaner having three longitudinal grooves meeting at the apeX of the reaner and a cutter-blade in each of the grooves, said blades extending beyond the meeting-point of the grooves, backing One against the other throughout the extensions, and being cut away to increase the abruptness of the taper near their points, substantially as set forth.
