MACHINE FOR MAKING CIGARETTES.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALBERT HUELSMANN, a resident of Fond du Lac, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Cigarettes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and

- exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in machines for making cigarettes, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, cheap, and compact device which can be carried in the pocket of the user and which can be easily operated by any one for the purpose of making cigarettes.

A further object is to produce a pocket cigarette-machine which shall be neat in appearance, will occupy a small amount of space in the pocket of the user, and which shall be effectual in all respects in the performance of its functions.

With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a sectional View. Figs. 3 and 4 are detail views. Fig. 5 is an end view.

A represents a thin metal plate which constitutes the body of the device and in general form is preferably rectangular. The plate A is made with an elongated opening 1' and at one edge with an elongated open slot or recess 2. The portion of the plate between the opening 1 and the slot or recess 2 constitutes the counter or table 3 of the machine, the metal at the ends of which is slotted, as at 4:, whereby to provide said counter or table witha yielding or spring portion 5, which will serve to exert sufficient pressure to insure the tight rolling of the cigarette, as will hereinafter be made apparent. In proximity to the opening 1 the plate Ais made with a narrow elongated slot 6, and in proximity to the open slot or recess 2 another narrow elongated slot 7 is made in the plate A. An apron 8, of silk or other flexible material, is provided at its ends with loops 9 10, respectively, and these loops are passed through the

6 and 7. Pins or rods 11 12 are passed through the respective loops and adapted at their ends to rest against 1 the under face of the plate A, whereby to prevent the escape of said flexible material. The pins or rods may be readily withdrawn when it is desired to remove the apron. The flexible material or apron 8 is made of sufficient length to permit a portion to drop through the opening 1 in plate A and form a pocket 13 for the reception of the tobacco and the edge of the paper of which the cigarette is to be composed.

The plate A is provided near its respective ends with narrow elongated slots 14 for the accommodation of uprights 15, which project from a plate or slide 16. The plate or slide 16; is preferably made U-shaped in general form, and from the arms 17 thereof (at points near the ends of the latter) the uprights 15 project. The plate or slide 16 is further made with a handle 18 to be grasped by the operator.

The plate or slide 16 is placed parallel with the under face of the plate A, and the uprights 15 project upwardly through the slots 14:. The uprights are perforated and form bearings for the journals 1190f a roller 20, adapted to move over the top of plate A, and said handle 18 of plate or slide 16 is prevented from being moved too far away from said plate A by means of the projecting ends 21 of said plate or slide. All the outer corners of both parts of the device are preferably rounded.

To operate the device, the parts will be made to assume the positions shown in Fig. 2, after which the edge of the cigarette-paper and the tobacco will be placed in the pocket 13 of apron 8. The slide 16 will now be pulled forward and the apron will be operated by the roller 20 to roll the paper on the tobacco and place the thus partially-made cigarette .upon the table or counter 3. The continued movement of the slide will now cause the paper to be completely wound on the tobaccoand the pressure exerted by the spring portion of the counter or table will serve to roll the cigarette tightly. When the cigarette passes the inner end of the apron, it will'fall from the machine through the open slot 1.

My improvements are very simple in construction, can be cheaply manufactured, are

neat in appearance and compact in form, and are efiectual in all respects in the performance of their functions.

Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a cigarette-making machine, the combination with a plate having an opening therein and constructed to form a table or counter, said plate having slots in proximity to its ends, of a slide, disposed under said plate, uprights on said slide projecting through said slots in the plate, a roller mounted in said uprights and a flexible apron attached at its ends to said plate and adapted to drop through said opening to form a pocket, substantially as set forth.

2. In a cigarette-making machine, the combination with a plate having an opening and a table or counter and having slots in proximity to said opening and table or counter respectively, of a flexible apron havingloops at its ends to be passed through said slots, pins passing through said loops to prevent the escape of said apron, aslide having uprights which operate in elongated slots in the plate and a roller carried by said slide, substantially as set forth.

3. In a cigarette-making machine, the combination With a plate having an opening and a table or counter, of a flexible apron attached at its ends to said plate and adapted to drop through said opening to form a pocket, a slide under said plate, uprights on said slide and operating in elongated slots in the plate, a roller mounted in said uprights and adapted to be passed over said table, and arms or projections on said slide to engage the under face of the plate, whereby to prevent the handle of the slide from moving too far away from the table or counter, substantially as set forth.
