To all whom it may concern.-l

Beit known that I, CHARLES W. ENGLERT, a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of my present invention is to provide a portable bench or seat which can be of various size and sills of different widths, of simple, strong, and durable construction, and useful as a support for iiower-pots, for persons cleaning the outside of the windows, che.

The vinvention consists in the improved portable bench or seat for window-frames, and in the combination and arrangements of the various parts thereof, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views, Figure 1 is a top plan View of a window-sill and of the adjoining portions of the frame, the latter shown in section, illustrating my improved portable bench or seat in operative position; Fig. 2, an enlarged sectional View on the line w x of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a detail view showing a certain toothed bar and its locking mechanism, and Fig. 4 a detail view illustrating a arranged on the free end of the toothed bar.

In said drawings, a represents the windowframe, b and c the inner and outer sill, CZ the parting rail, and a the outer stop-bead, all of usual and well-known construction.

The portable bench or seat consists of a board or frame-plate f, provided at its upper portion with a suitable railing g and on its under side with grooved guide-plates 1', ar-

ing longitudinally from end to end thereof. Within said grooved guide-plates are slidin gly arranged the toothed bars z", provided with flanges i2, engaging the grooves in said guide-plates, as clearly shown. Each of the toothed bars t' is controlled by a pawl @3, pivlotally secured, as at 0, to lugs projecting from the end of the board f and provided with a knob 5 for conveniently lifting said pawl out of engagement with the teeth of said bar i. On the rounded outer portion i of each toothed bar is loosely arranged a sleeve or collar m, carrying a screw m', engaged by an internally-threaded sleeve m2, adapted to bear against the outer side of the inner sill b and provided with a pol ygonal-shaped head or enlargement for conveniently operating the same. On the free end of each toothed bar t" is secured a rectangular shaped block n, adapted to engage the groove (for the outer sash) formed by the parting-rail d and the outer stop-bead a. A pawl n' is pivotally secured, as at n", to projecting lugs of said block n, andA is adapted to bind with-its free end against the inner side of the outer stop-bead d', `as clearly illustrated in Figs. l and 2.

On the under outer portion of the board f and near each end thereof are arranged guideplates h yat right angles to the guide-plates i and separated from the board by collars ho, surrounding 'the nails or screws by which said plates 7i are secured to the said board. A iiat bar h' is supported by said guide-plates h and is capable of being moved to'and from the center line of the" board f for a purpose hereinafter stated. At or near each end of said at bar h' and d ependingtherefrom is arranged a screw h2, carrying an internallythreaded sleeve 71,3, adapted to bear on the top portion of the outer sill c to thus retain the board f in a substantially horizontal position.

For conveniently operating said sleeve it is provided with a polygonal-shaped head or enouter end with a screw t5, on which is arranged the internally-threaded cap i, provided with a pointed end 7, adapted to engage the frame a and having a polygonalshaped head or enlargement for conveniently operating said cap.

lVhen the portable bench or seat is to be secured to the window-frame, the toothed bars t" are moved outward until the squared blocks n (carried by said bars) engage and bear against the trame a. Their respective pawls il will hold said bars in extended position, as will be manifest. The sleeves h3 and m2 are lthen operated until they lirmly bind upon the top portion of the outer sill c and the outer portion of the inner sill b, respectively. The pawls nf, bearing against the inner side of the outer stop-bead a', prevent a tilting of the bench, and the latter is thus rendered capable of supporting` a considerable weight, as will be manifest.

Vhen the' bench is to be removed, the sleeves nl? are operated in the opposite direction, and after the pawls s have been raised the toothed bars t are slid back, so as to disengage the squared blocks 'n from the window-frame.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A portable bench or seat for windowframes, comprising a frame-plate, a guide on the under side of said frame-plate and longitudinally extending from end to end, a pawlcontrolled toothed bar slidingly arranged in said guide and at each end of the frame-plate, means arranged on the outer end of each toothed bar for locking the same against the sides of a window-frame, a screw carried by cach toothed bar and at right angles thereto, an internally-threaded sleeve on each screw and adapted to bear against the outer portion of the inner sill of the window-frame, and means Carried by the outer under portion of the frame-plate, for supporting said frameplate on the top portion of the outer sill, substantially as described.

L. A portable bench or seat for windowframes, comprising a frame-plate, a guide on the under side of said frame-plate and longitudinally extending from end to end, a pawlcontrolled toothed bar slidingly arranged in said guide and at each end of the frame-plate, means arranged on the outer end ot each toothed bar for locking the same against the sides of a windowrame, a screw carried by each toothed bar and at right angles thereto, an internally-threaded sleeve on each screw and adapted to bear against the outer portion of the inner sill of the windowframe, a series of screws adjustably arranged on the under outer side of the frame-plate and depending` therefrom, an internally-threaded sleeve on each et said screws and adapted to bear against the top portion ot the outer sill, substantially as described.

3. A portable bench or seat for windowframes, comprising a frame-plate, a guide on the underside of said frame-plate and longitudinally extending from end to end, a pawlcontrolled toothed bar slidingly arranged in said guide and at each end of the 1"; rame-plate, means arranged on the outer end of each toothed bar for locking the same against the sides of a window-frame, a screw carried by each toothed bar and at right angles thereto, an internally-threaded sleeve on each screw and adapted to bear against the outer portion of the inner sill of the window-frame, a series of guide-plates on the under outer portion of the 'frame-plate and at right angles to the toothed bars, a bar slidingly supported by said guide-plates, aserew at or near each end of said bar and dependin therefrom, and an internally-threaded sleeve on each of said screws, substantially as and for the purposes described.

4L. A portable bench or seat for windowframes, comprising a frame-plate, a guide on the under side of said frame-plate and longitudinally extending from end to end, a pawlcontrolled toothed bar slidingly arranged in said guide and at each end ot the frame-plate, a block on the free end of each toothed bar, a pawl pivotally arranged on each block, a screw carried by each toothed bar and loosely arranged thereon and at right angles thereto, an internally-threaded sleeve on each of said screws, and adj ustahle supporting means on t CHARLES \V.
