SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,576, dated November 30, 1897.
Application filed April 21, 1897. Serial No. 633,117. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LRAYMoND CLYDE STEW- ART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huntingdon, in the county of Huntingdon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Composition of Matter, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains' to make and use the same. I
The object of this invention is to provide a new and useful composition of matter for use as a cooling agent for heated journals, journal-boxes, bearings, and for other and similar purposes, a further object being to provide a compound which when mixed with oil can be used as a lubricant which is especially designed for use in connection with the axles of railway-cars and which, in addition to possessing the qualities of a firstclass cooler, also acts as a lubricant for the heated axles or spindles.
My composition consists of the followingingredients, combined in the proportions specified, namely: soap, three pounds; tallow, two pounds; plumbago, one pound; white lead, one-half pound; gum-camphor, three ounces; resin, two ounces, and table-salt, four ounces. These ingredients are compounded by first dissolving the soap by means of water and heat, then dissolving the tallow by means of heat, then dissolving the camphor and resin in the tallow, then adding the melted soap thereto, and then adding the White lead, and after the product has partially cooled the plumbago is added, and lastly the salt, and as these parts are mingled in the manner described they are violently agitated by any suitable means.

I am aware that some of the articles specified have been heretofore used for a similar purpose, and I am also aware that all the ingredients specified are well known; but the composition which I employ is new and the results produced by the use thereof far superior to those produced by other compounds or compositions for a similar purpose.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The herein-described composition of mat ter to be used as a cooling agent and lubricant, consisting of soap, tallow, plumbago, white lead, gum-camphor, resin, and tablesalt, in the proportions specified.
