Description

UNITED STATE PATENT O FICE.
MADISON L. \VOODBURY, OF ST. ALBANS, VERMONT.
COMPOUND PACKING FOR HOT JOURNALS ON CARS, 80C.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,277, dated June 26, 1883.
Application filed April 4, 1883. No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MADISON L. WOODBURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St.
Albans, in the county of Franklin, State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Composition of Matter to be Used for Cooling Hot Journals (sometimes called hot-boxes 011 Cars and Locomotive-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
, My composition consists of the following ingredients, combined in the proportions stated, viz: talc, (or soapstone,) two hundred pounds; tallow, one hundred pounds; sulphur, twentyfive pounds; lard, five gallons.
In making the above-named compound, put in the tallow and heat it hot; then put inthe sulphur and keep stirring it until thoroughly dissolved; then put in the lard and stir it until mixed. Keep stirring while the tale or soapstone is being put in. When the whole is thoroughly mixed, let the compound cool.
In using the compound, put it into the box around the heated journal, when the car can be put in motion and the journal will cool while the car or engine is moving, whether at a slow or a rapid rate.
By the use of the above compound all delay on account of hot-boxes is entirely avoided,
and the box will cool while the train is in mo-' cooling a hot-box when the car is in motion; I
nor could this compound be applied directly to a hot-box and accomplish the result mine does, but the train would have to stop until the box had partially cooled, to say the least.
I am not aware that all of the ingredients of my composition in the proportions stated have been used together.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The herein-deseribed compound packing for cooling hot journals, consisting of talc, tallow, sulphur, and lard, in the proportions specified'.
