UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD R. AVERY, OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS.
SPARK-ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,369, dated November 30, 1897.
Application fil d December 14, 1896. Serial No. 615,629. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD R. AVERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at J oliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark Arresters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in spark-arresters, and has more particular rela tion to spark-arresters for steam-locomotives.
The invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, all of which will be hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a central vertical transverse section through a locomotive provided with my invention. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged detail perspective view of my improved perforated arrester, and Fig. 3 represents an enlarged detail per- 2 5 ,spective view of the clamp for securing said arrester to the steam-pipes.
A in the drawings represents the smokestack, B my improved perforated spark-arrester, and C O the pipes communicating with the exhaust-ports from the respective cylinders upon opposite sides of the locomotive. The said arrester B comprises aperforated inverted truncated cone suitably supported in the smoke-stack A, so as to close the entire cross-section'of the same. The pipes O 0 connect, respectively, at one end with the respective exhaust-ports of the steam-cylinders a and at their opposite ends to a common pipe 0, which extends up into the lower open end of the said perforated cone B. The lower end of said cone is formed with an annular flange b, that is clamped about the said pipe 0' by the clamp-sleeve D. This sleeve is provided upon its free ends with two apertured lugs 01, through which is passed a clamping-bolt d.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that the smoke and products of combustion passing upward through the stack A are forced to pass through the perforated cone B, and thus the sparks and cinders are arrested. By my peculiar construction and connection of the exhaust-steam pipes the draft is caused to take place in the stack from the upper side of the perforated cone B, and is thus not interfered with by the products of combustion upon the under side of said cone. It will also be observed that while the sparks and cinders are effectively arrested the draft at the same time is not interfered within any manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a spark-arrester for locomotives, the combination with a perforated truncated inverted cone applied in the smoke-stack, and having an annular split clamping-flange at its lower open end, of a plurality of steam-pipes connected respectively to the exhaust-ports of the cylinders, a common pipe connected to said exhaust-pipes and having one end mounted within the annular flange at the lower end of the cone, and a split clamping-sleeve applied about said annularflange to contract the same about the steam-pipe and thus clamp the two firmly together, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib ing witnesses.
EDWARD R. AVERY.
