GURRYGOMB; No. 594,218. Patented Nov. 23,1897.

llnrrnn STATES mm mes RENO GRANT TOMBAUGH, OF SOENERY HILL, PENNSYLVANIA.
CURRYCOMB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,218, dated November 23, 1897.
Application filed May 18,1897.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RENO GRANT ToM- BAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scenery Hill, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ourrycombs, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to currycombs; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is also comparatively inexpensive.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved currycomb, and Fig. 2 a side view thereof.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a currycomb which comprises a frame or head 5, which may be composed of any desired material and constructed in any desired manner, and said frame or head-is provided at one side with a brush 6 and at the opposite side with transverse flanges or ribs 7, which are composed of metal and which may be provided with serrations or teeth, if desired, and I also provide a handle 8, which is provided at one end with a yoke 9, between the separate sides of which the frame or head 5 is pivoted, as shown at 10, and secured to one side of said frame or head 5, which is preferably rectangular in form, is a contractile spring 11, one end of which is secured to the handleS Serial No. 637,034- (No model.)
or to cross-head 12 of the yoke 9, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
The object of the spring 11 is to prevent the pivoted head or frame 5 of the comb from turning entirely around and at the same time to permit said frame or head of the comb to partially turn when pressure is applied thereto, whereby the head or frame 5 of the comb proper may be held at any suitable angle to the handle in the operation thereof, so that the hands will not come in contact with the animal in the use of the device.
It will be apparent that either side of the comb may be used, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and which is als comparatively inexpensive.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a
currycomb comprising a frame or head, one
side of which is provided with a brush and the opposite side with transverse ribs or flanges, a yoke in which said head is pivotally mounted and in which it is adapted to partially turn, and a coil-spring secured to the inner end of said yoke and to one side of said head, said yoke being provided with a handle, substantially as and for the purpose described. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 11th day of May, 1897.
RENO GRANT TOMBAUGH. Witnesses:
CHRISTOPHER 0. Lone, ROBERT MODONOUGH.
