SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,866, dated November 16, 1897. Application filed February 19,1897. Serial No. 624,122. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that we, CORNELIUS O. E. VAN ALSTINE and GEORGE W. GRAHAM, citizens of the United States, residing in Paterson, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'a Combined Spinning, Doub ling,and Twisting Machine; and we do hereby declare the following to be a-full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,. ref erence being had to'the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of our present invention is to provide a combined spinner, doubler, and twister of simple, strong, and durable construction, reliable in operation, and compact in construction, and thus occupying very little space compared with the several machines at present used to accomplish the above. A furtherobject is to provide said combined spinner, doubler, and twister with a stop-motion whereby when one of the ends breaks its respective bobbin and spindle are instantaneously stopped, andthusreducin g the waste to a minimum.
The invention consists in the improved combined spinner, doubler, and twister, in the receiving-bobbin-carrying reciprocating beam or carriage, its cooperating thread delivery and twisting means, in the stop-motion used in connection with the above, and
in the combination and arrangement of the various parts, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several views, Figure l is an end elevation of our combined spinner, doubler, and twister with certain parts removed; Fig. 2, a portion of a front elevation of Fig. 1, certain.parts being broken away to better illustrate the nature of our said invention; Fig. 3, an enlarged detail view of the top portion of Fig. 2; Fig. 4t, atop plan View of Fig. 3; Fig. 5, a detail view of a certain mechanism used in connection with the stop-motion; Fig. 6, a detail view .properly secured together by the rails a a and top rails a o On the rail ct are mounted a series of spindles 0 carrying the bob.- bins 0 provided at their lower portions with grooved pulleys e adapted to be operated by the endless belt 0 Said belt passes over the intermediate grooved pulleys 0 and 0 and the driving-pulley 0 which latter is mounted on the centrally-arranged shaft parallel with the rails a and having proper bearings, as clearly shown. Theshaft 0 on which are arranged the loose and fixed driving-pulleys 0 carries also the grooved wheels 0 and 0 transmitting motion to the endless belts 0 and 0 respectively, for purposes hereinafter described.
On projecting centrally-arranged lugs of the end portions a of the frame are fulcrumed, as at c, the upwardly-extending arms 0 supporting with their upper ends the beam which latter is adapted to carry the receiving-bobbins c andalso at or near its ends grooved pulleys c for the belt 0 Each receiving-bobbin c is provided at its inner end with a grooved pulley adapted to be operated by the endless belt 0 and is re volubly mounted on the spindle 0, arranged at right angles to the beam 0 and secured to the central'portion of a plate m, which latter is mounted on said beam by means of the guideplates m and is securely held in normalposition by a spring-controlled latch m, fulcrumed, asat m to the top of the beam 0 as will be manifest.
To the back of the plate m is secured a horizontal pin m arranged in the vertical slot m of beam 0 and is adapted to engage the fulcrumed latch m when the plate in has been released and forced upward by the action of the belt 0 to limit the said upward moveas clearly shown in Fig. 3. This looped spring-wire is intended to prevent the entire removal of the bobbin-carrying plate m from its guide-plates when a bobbin has to be replaced and the latch m has been moved out of the path of the pin m A series of intermediate grooved pulleys g are arranged alternately with the grooved pulleys 0 to insure a greater frictional contact between the latter and the endless belt c as will be manifest.
At right angles to the rail a and secured thereto in any desired manner is the upwardly-extending plate (1 provided at certain intervals and in alinement with the spindles c with vertical]y-arranged slots a, pen etrated by the hollow shaft-s b, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.
The hollow shaft Z) is provided at its inner end with a grooved pulley I), in frictional contact with the endless belt 0 passing over intermediate pulleys g and over end pulleys c which latter are also carried by said plate a The shaft 1) has its hearings in the plate 9 and also in the enlarged portion g of bracket or box 5 secured to and projecting from the plate 9 Said plate and also the bracket or box b are penetrated by a vertical slot 9 adapted to coincide, when desired, with the slot 9 penetrating the hollow shaft 1) and its grooved pulley b.
The plate 9 is slidingly arranged in the guides g and is held in normal position against the spring action of the endless belt 0 by means of the f ulerumed spring-controlled latch g and is limited in its upward movement, when disengaged from said latch, by the bin g projecting at right angles from the said plate 9 and adapted to engage the guide-plate 9 as clearly shown in Fig. 3.
Projecting from the grooved pulley b of the hollow shaft Z) and removably secured to the said pulley by means of the screws Q22 are the Lshaped arms Z2 b arranged diametrically opposite each other and provided at their bends and also at their free ends with slotted eyes I) and b, respectively, forming passages for the doubled and twisted thread T, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
At about the center of the machine and at each side thereof are arranged the outwardlyprojecting bracket-s (Z carrying two parallel rods d and (Z, the inner one of which isprovided with a series of eyes (Z, while the outer one forms the fulcrum for a series of fallers (1 carrying at their free ends eyes (Z and adapted to engage the horizontal portion h of the downwardly-extcnding U -shaped wire it pivotally suspended from a needlepointed lever h Said lever is fnlcrumed, as at 7L8, to a bracket 7L", extending upwardly from the rail (1 and, when in normal position, with its needle-pointed end in engagement with the hammer or weight 7r, arranged on the arm 7r", pivotally secured, as at 7t, to the side of the said rail (L The upper portion of the U -shaped wire 7a is slotted and adapted to receive the needle-pointed end of the lever 72?, while the shank h of said U -shaped wire is adapted to prevent the disengagement of the fallers (Z when out of normal position.
The hammer or weight h" is adapted when released from the lever 7L to strike against the outwardly-projecting portion ha of a shaft 7L eccentrically fulcrumed by means of its crank portions h to a cross-bar 7L arranged on and secured to the under side of the rails a. On the shaft h are loosely arranged the upwardly-extending plates h and 2', provided with vertical elongated slots 7L0 and z", penetrated by the headed pins h" and 11 which latter are secured to and project at right angles from the plate a and beam 0 respectively. (See Fig. 5.) The upper portions of the plates 1' and h are each provided with an indentation adapted to engage the fulcrumed latches m and g for the platesm and g respectively, and to thus allow said latches to remain in normal position. Suitable guides 11 are arranged in front of each hollow shaft and are provided with a series of slotted eyes 11 and with a thread-retaining rod D as clearly shown in Figs. 7 and 8.
On a shaft centrally arranged in suitable bearingsin the frame a, is seen red a beltwheel c connected through belt 0 with the belt-pulley c, mounted on shaft 0. On the shaft o is also arranged a pinion c meshing into gear-wheel 0 mounted on the parallel shaft 0, which latter carries eccentric cams 0 adapted to strike against antifriction-rollers y, carried by the arms to thus operate said arms. The latter are controlled by means of spiral springs f in a manner well understood in the art.
The threads '1 and T from one set of bobbins 0 0 pass through the eyes (Z (which latter are arranged above and substantially in the center lines of their respective bobbins) and through the eyes (Z to and over the rod 1), arranged horizontally and supported by brackets If, and from there through two of the slotted eyes 6 of the guides 1)" into and through the hollow shaft Z), from whence they are led as a twisted thread T to the slotted eye U The thread is given one wrap around the arm Z1 and after passing through the slotted eye b is taken up by the bobbin 0.
From the foregoing it is easily understood that the threads T T while the bobbins c are rotated are spun as they leave the same, as the eyes (Z are arranged above the said bobbins and at a point within the area of their circumference. The said threads are doubled when leaving the guides Z) and are twisted while passing through the revolving hollow shaft. Should one of the threads break, its respective faller (Z strikes against the horizontal portion W of the downwardlyextending wire it with sufficient force to disengage the needle-pointed lever h from the weight 7L4, which latter drops onto the projecting end 703 of the shaft 7L and operates the same-that is to say, said shaft by means of its eccentrics 71 is moved downward, carrying with it the slotted plates h and i. Said plates then force the fulcrumed latches g and m out of their respective indentations and thus out of the path of the plates 9 and m, respectively. The said plates, now released, are sprung upward by the action of the end-' less belts and 0 and the grooved pulley b of the hollow shaft 17 and the grooved pul-. ley 0 of the bobbin 0 are thus thrown out of operative engagement with their respective belts. After the break has been repaired the various parts are returned to their normal operative positions, as will be manifest.-
It may be remarked that the bobbins in this machine are interchangeable-that is to say, the bobbins and their grooved pulleys by subjecting e are uniformly constructed with the bobbins c and their pulleys c so that the latter,when filled, can be placed on the spindles e on rail a, and their threads can be again combined them to the operation heretofore described.
WVe do not intend to limit ourselves to the precise construction shown and described, as various alterations can be made without changing the scope of our invention; but

Acombined spinning,doubling and twisting machine, consisting of a frame, a reciprocating beam in said frame, a series of fulcrumed arms supporting said beam, a shaft in said frame, a series of cams on said shaft and adapted to operate said fulcrumed arms, means for revolving said shaft, a series of re ceiving-bobbins carried by said beam and at right angles thereto, a series of hollow shafts v in said frame and in alinement with the receiving-bobbins, an L-shaped arm projecting from the inner end of each shaft and in close proximity with its respective bobbin, a series of delivery-bobbins also arranged in the frame, a series of intermediate eyes between the delivery-bobbins and the hollow shafts, and means for revolving the delivery and receiving bobbins'and the hollow shafts, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. A combined spinning,doublin g and twisting machine, consisting of a frame, a reciproeating beam in said frame, means for operating said beam, a series of plates slidingly arranged on said beam, a stationary spindle on each plate and projecting at right angles therefrom, a receiving-bobbin revolubly arranged on each of said spindles, a series of hollow shafts in said frame and in alinement with the receiving-bobbins, an L-shaped arm projecting from the inner endof each shaft and in close proximity with its respective bobbin, a series of delivery -bobbins also arranged in the frame, a series of intermediate eyes between the delivery-bobbins and the" hollow shafts, and means for revolving the delivery and receiving bobbins and the holing machine, consisting of a frame, a reciproplate'and in front of said slots, a hollow shaft revolubly arranged in each of said plates, an L-shaped arm projecting from the inner end of the shaft and in close proximity with its respective bobbin,-a series of delivery-bobbins also arranged in the frame, a series of. intermediate eyes between the delivery-bobbins and the hollow shafts, and means for revolving the delivery and receiving bobbins and the hollow shafts, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.

A combined spinning,doubling and twistcating beam in said frame, means for operating said beam, a series of receiving-bobbins carried by said beam and at right angles thereto, a series of hollow shafts in said frame and in alinement with the receiving-bobbins, an L-shaped arm projecting'from the inner end of each shaft and in close proximity with its respective bobbin, a series of delivery-bobbins also arranged in the frame, two horizontal rods in the frame, a series of eyes on one of said rods and above and substantially in the center lines of their respective deliverybobbins, a series of fallers fulcrumed on the other rod, a downwardly-proj ectin g U -shaped arm adapted to be engaged by its respective faller, a fulcrumed lever pivotally connected with said U-shaped arm, an eccentrically-arranged shaft in the frame and at right angles to the beam, a fulcrumed weight adapted to operate said shaft and in engagement with the fulcrumed lever, and means operated by said shaft for controlling the receiving and delivery bobbins, and means for revolving IIO the delivery and receiving bobbins and the hollow shafts, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.

A combined spinning,doubling and twisting machine, consisting of a frame, a reoipro; eating beam in said frame, means for operating said beam, a series of plates slidingly arranged on said beam, means for lockingsaid plates in normal position, a bobbin carried by each of said plates, a series of deliverybobbins also arranged in the frame, two horizontal rods in the frame, a series of eyes on -one of said rods and above and substantially in the center lines of their respective bobbins, a series of fallers fulcrumed on the other rod, a downwardly projecting U shaped arm adapted to be engaged byits respective faller, a f ulc'rumed lever pivotally connected with said U -shaped arm, an eccentrically-arranged shaft in the frame and at right angles to the beam, a fulcrumed weight adapted to operate said shaft and in engagement with the fulcrumed lever,means operated by said shaft for controlling the locking mechanism, a hollow shaft in front of each receiving-bobbin, and means for revolving the receiving and the delivery bobbins and the hollow shafts respectively, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
6. The combination with a frame, of a beam in said frame, a series of vertically-guided plates on said beam, a fulcrumed spring-controlled latch for each of said plates and adapted to lock the same, a vertical plate provided with an indentation in engagement with each latch, an eecentrically arranged shaft arranged in said frame and at right angles to the beam and supporting said vertical plates, and means for operating said shaft, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
7. The combination withaframe, of a beam in said frame, a series of vertically-guided plates on said beam, afulcrumed spring-controlled latch for each of said plates and adapted to lock the same, a vertical plate provided with an indentation in engagement with each latch, an eccentrically-arranged shaft in said frame and at right angles to the beam and supporting said vertical plates, and having one of its ends bent outward, a weight adapted to engage the outward-bent end of the shaft, a fulcrnmed needle-pointed lever in engagement with said weight, and means for operating said lever, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.

The combination with a frame, of a series of delivery-bobbins in said frame, a series of receiving-bobbins also in said frame and substantially at right angles to the deliverybobbins, a series of revolving hollow shafts intermediately arranged between said series of bobbins andin alinement with their respective receiving-bobbins, an L-shaped arm projeeting from the inner end of each hollow shaft, a guide in front of the forward end of each shaft, a series of eyes intermediately arranged between said guides and the deliverybobbins and above and substantially in the center lines of the latter, and means for revolving the receiving and delivery bobbins and the hollow shafts, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
9. The combination with a frame, of a reciprocating horizontal beam in said frame, a series of stationary spindles on said beam and at right angles thereto, a rail parallelwith the beam and on one side of the frame, a series of vertically-arranged spindles on said rail,interchangeable bobbins on said series of spindles, a series of revolving hollow shafts intermediately arranged and carried by the frame, an L-shaped arm projecting from the inner end of each shaft, a guide in front of each shaft, a series of eyes intermediately arranged between said guides and the spindles on the rail and above and substantially in the centerline of the said spindles, and means for revolving the bobbins and the hollow shafts, all said parts, substantially as and for the purposes described.
