BICYCLE-HANG ER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,728, dated November 16, 1897.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that .we, ABRAHAM B. PRUDEN and CHARLES M.WArERBURY,citizens of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, Kings county, State of NewYork, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bicycle- I-Iangers, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates especially to devices employed for supporting bicycles when not in use, and has for its object the provision of a support or hanger arranged for being secured to the wall of a room, car, 850., whereby the bicycle may be supported in a vertical position, either at right angles to the wall or swung parallel with it, the hanger when not in use folding downward out of the way.

To attain the desired end, our invention consists in certain novel and useful combinations or arrangements of parts and peculiarities of construction and operation, all of which will be hereinafter first fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, Figure l is a plan View of our bicycle-hanger. Fig. 2 is a side elevation with a wheel therein, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the support as folded downward out of the way.

Like numerals of reference, Wherever 'they occur, indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

1 is a bracket arranged for bolting or screwing to any suitable support, as the wall of a room, car, 650. This bracket is provided with a fiat face-plate 2, over which, at a slight elevation, projects a lip 3.

4 is a verticalscrew-threaded pin or stud fixed in the center of the plate 2.

5 is a movable plate arranged to rest upon the fixed face-plate 2. The screw 4 passes through a perforation in the movable plate, and theedge of this plate passing beneath the lip 3.

6 is a depending edge formed upon the plate 5, and 7 are slots in said edge, the same being particularly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

8 is a curved plate fixed to or formed with the plate 5, as most convenient.

12is a thumb nut upon the screw 4..

9 is a wheel-receiver, preferably formed of strap metal, as illustrated, the front of the receiver being bent to conform to the curve of a wheel-tire, as at 10, and the rear eX- t-remities of the receiver projecting beneath the bracket-plate, the outward movement being limited by pins 11.

14 is a verticalbar or rod fixed in the plate 5 and provided with a grasping fork 15. W'ith this bar or fork or with the plate 5 may be connected any suitable locking device for securing the wheel against removal, if desired.

When not in use, the receiver 9 hangs downward, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the entire device being at such an elevation upon the wall as to be out of the way. When it is desired to place a bicycle in the holder, the receiver 9 is drawn upward and outward, the inner extremities finding a bearing beneath the plate 2, Fig. 2, and the rear portion of the front wheel 13 of a bicycle is placed in the receiver, supporting the wheel in a vertical position, taking up but a small portion of the space usually required. The wheel may remain at right angles to the wall or support, especially when the hangers are close together and occupied by wheels; or by loos' ening the thumb-nut 12 the receiver may be swung to the right or left, bringing the wheel close up to the wall, and a turn of the thumbnut will secure the parts in the desired position.

Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A bicycle-hanger, in which is comprised a horizontal fixed bracket mounted upon a vertical support; a plate movable in a horizontal plane mounted upon said bracket, and a folding wheel-receiver in the form of a loop carried in slots in said movable plate, and adapted to support a bicycle in a half-inverted position, substantially as shown and described.
