SPECIFICATON forming part of Letters Patent No, 593,709, dated November 16, 1897.

T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEE WARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wrightsborough, in the county of Gonzales and State of- Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to that type of cultivators shown and described in thepatent to M. Bruner, Jr., No. 100,720, dated March 15, 1870, and also to that class embodying said type of cultivators Which employ triangular or diverging plow-beams.
The object of my invention is to provide improved means for pivoting the main standards to the plow-beams and securing the rear ends of the plow-beams together, whereby said standards may be more easily operated.
It is also my object to provide an improved arrangement and attachment for the steps or stirrups wherebyl am enabled to give.the op era tor a better purchase in manipulating the side movement of the beams and regulating the depth of the cultivator-teeth, besides removing the stirrups from possible contact with the soil thrown by the middle plow.
It is also my object to provide improved means for adjstablyattaching the cultivator'standards to the under side of the beams, whereby provision is made for the lateral adjustment of the cultivators or plows also, to provide an improved cultivator-standard and sleeve adapted for the attachment of either shovels, sweeps, or cultivator-teeth.
In the accompahying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is aside elevation of the sleeve for the cultivator-standards. Fig. 4 is a section of the -sleeve, taken online 44 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the plate for attachin g the cultivator-standards to the beams. Fig. 6 is asection on line 6 6 of Fig 1.
Referring moreparticularly to the drawings, A denotes the axle of the cultivator; B B, the upright standards, provided with pvot-bolts b b; C C, the beams.
D denotes the plow or cultivator standards,
and I-I the sleeves'secured to the lower ends thereof.
E E denote the metal plates for securing the standards to the beams.
' F F denote spreaders interposed between the rear ends of the diverging beams.
Gr denotes the stirrups, secured to adjacent rear ends of each beam.
As shown in Fig. 1, the standards arepivoted between the extreme rear ends of the diverging portion of each beam, and forward of this pivotal point, between the diverging portions of each beam, I secure the spreaders F. Thus said diverging portions of the beams are spread apart and connected together by said spreaders forward of the pivotal connections of the upright standards, and thus relieve said connections from any lateral pressure due heretofore to tying in said diverging portions of the beam by the pivotal bolts b. The stirrups G are Secured by the bolts b b to the innermost portion of each beam inside of each standard and not under the standard, as heretofore, and are thus brought nearer together, giving the operator a better purchase for manipulating the beams. Again,by this arrangement said stir1ups are removed from possible contact with the soil thrown by the middle plows. One side of the stirrup serves as a wear-plate for washers b, and a wearplate c is provided at the Other side for washer b B denotes collars provided for the upper ends of the standards B, having eyes for con necting the springchain and perforations which register with perforations in the ends of the standards for the passage of the standard -rods B The metal plates E E are adapted to secure the plow-standards to the beams. The plates E are secured to the upper sides of the beams and the plates E to the under side. The latter plates are provided with slots e e, running crosswise of the beam, which allow of the lateral adjustment of the plows for wide or narrow roads. The upper portions of cultivator-standards D are formed similar to the usual type of metal standards of this class of cultivators, but the lower portions have the sides bent together, as shown in Figs.2and 3.
H denotes my improved sleeve for connectplows to the standards D. Said sleeve is formed with a narrow opening in its upper end and rear side to admit lower end of standard and is provided with bolt-holes, which register with like holes through the standard to admit fastening-bolts 7L 7L.
7L denotes aslot cutin the face of the sleeve. Upon the right side of said slot, as at 7L4, the sleeve is provided with a projectin g portion which is beveled inwardly, while the opposite side 7L", which is the side always adjacent to the row of corn or other plants, is made flat. By thus providing the sleeve with the flat side 7L I am enabled to secure a shovel-plow or sweep to the standards as well as the cultivator-teeth.
Having shown and described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a eultivator of the class described having divergin g or triangular beams, the combination of the spreaders F interposed between the diverging members of the beams forward of the upright standards, the upright standards pivoted between the rear ends of said beams by a pivot bolt having washers b Z), and the stirrups secured to the beam inside of or between said standards.
2. In a cultivator of the class described the combination with the eultivator-standards and the beams, of a metal plate E provided with slots e e running crosswise of said beams and provided with suitable bolts and jam-nuts whereby said standards are adjustable laterally substantially as described.
3. In a eultivator the combination with the eultivator-standards of the sleeve II provided with slots 71 and having a projecting side 7L4 beveled inwardly and a straight or flat side 7L5, substan tially as and for the purposes described.
4. In a cultivator of the class described, the combination of the cultivator-standard having its sides bent together at its lower end, and the sleeve Il, provided with openings which register with the lower end of the standard, and means for securing said sleeve and standard together, substantially as described.
