Description
@.sLussEa- Cultivators. 40,145,690, Patenrednec.ls,173.
AUNITEI) STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE sLUssER, OE HILLSEOROUGH, OHIO, AssIGNOR OE ONE- HALE HIS RIGHT To c. s. BELL AND JAMES H. ANDERSON, OE SAME PLAGE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,690, dated D`cen1bcl' 16, 1873; application filed August 20, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SLUssER, of Hillsborough, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improved Gultivator; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which the drawing is a perspective view.
Similar letters of reference in the accompanying drawing denote the same parts.
This invention relates to double-shovel walking cultivators; and has for its object to provide for the public a cheap and durable cultivator of this class, in which the front ends of the shovel-beams shall be so connected that they Shall have independent longitudinal and lateral play, be adjustable to and from each other, and be supported in such manner as to facilitate the turning of the implement at the ends of rows. To these ends my invention consists in the manner of connecting and supporting the beams at their front ends, which I will now proceed to describe.
In the drawing, A A represent the cultivators, of the ordinary walking pattern, the beams B B of which are provided at their front ends with transverse horizontal slots C C, adapted to receive the bent ends of a wooden or metallic yoke, D. The yoke D is secured in the beams B by vertical-pins E passing through the beams and .orifices d in the ends of the yoke, there being a number of orifices .sufticiently lon g to admit of the free lateral and longitudinal play of the plows, and the consequent swinging of the beams upon their piv` ots E. F F represent curved runners attached to the lower sides of the beams at their front ends, and supporting the same when turning` the cultivators, and at other times when the shovels are not in use. G G represent the clevises on the ends of the beams, to which the horses are attached. It will be seen that by this arrangement the cultivators are connected and supported without the use of the wheels7 axle, and tongue usually employed, thus producing a cheap implement, which is at the same time more durable than the ordinar f' kind, and under perfect control. The runners facilitate the turning of the cultivators, and are as efficient in this respect as wheels would be, besides breaking less corn.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- The combination, in a double-shovel walking 'cultivator, of the beams B B, slotted at their front ends, the adjustable arched yoke D, adjusting-pins E, and curved fixed runners F, constructed arranged, and operating as described.
GEORGE SLUSSER.
