LOUIS K. JOHNSON AND ABBOT AUGUSTUS LOW, OF BROOKLYN, NEW f YORK, ASSIGNO'RS TO THE ALDEN TYPE MACHINE COMPANY, OF
NEW YORK, N. Y.
TYPE-CONTAINING CHANNEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 593,668, dated November 16, 1897. Application filed September 1'7, 1896. Serial N- 606,078. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, LoUIs KOSSUTH J OHN- SON and ABBOT AUGUSTUS Low, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Containing Channels, of which the following is a specification sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to type-containing channels for use in type-distributing and type-setting apparatus; and the invention consists in the special construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the end of the channel to which the type-floor is hinged. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the opposite side of the channel. Fig. 3 is a front view of the channel. Fig. 4 is a central section thereof. Fig. 5 is an end view. Fig. 6 is a rear view. Fig. 7 is an elevation showing the channel reversed and the type-support swung back, as in the type-distributing apparatus.
Our channel is designed more especially for use in connection with what is known as the Alden type-distributer and in connection with our series of type-setter cases, in which the types are forwarded from the lower ends of the type-channels for removal to the stick by hand.
A is the spine of the channel, to which the side walls a a are attached. The slot 8 is formed in the spine A, above the position of the typefloor T for the passage of the typeforwarding blade in the setter-case. One side wall is longer than the other, extending to the bottom of the spine, while the opposite side wall ends on a level with the top of the type-platform T when the latter is in position, the side tof the type-floor T forming a continuation of the channel on that side. Said side wall 25 of the type-platform T is pivoted to the lower end of the spine at 10, as shown in Fig. 1.
The under side of the type-floor T is provided with a spring-bolt S, which engages with the bolt-hole s in the lower end of the spine when the type-floor is in position, as shown in Fig- 4. By this means the floor T is rigidly secured in position for the support of the type, while provision is made for releasing it and swinging it back into the position shown in Fig. 7, when itis inserted in the type-distributing apparatus.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a spine A, integral with thewalls a, a, said walls a, a, one of which. a is shorter than the other, the typeplatform T formed with the rectangular eX- tension 25, coinciding with the sidewalla, of the channel above and by which the platform T is pivotally connected to the spine of the channel, and the spring-bolt mounted on said rectangular extension't, of the platform T, and engaging with the spine of the channel, substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
. 2. The combination of the spineA, integral with the walls a, a, and formed with the slot .9, said walls a, a, one of which is shorter than the spine A, the type-platform T pivoted to the spine of the channel below the slot 8, and formed with the rectangular extension coinciding with the sidewall a, above, and the spring-bolt S, mounted on the extension 75 under the type-platform T and engaging with the spine of the channel, whereby when the typeplatform is locked in position, said springbolt will be inclosed and protected by the extension 25 on one side and by the lower end of the side walla, on the other side, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
LOUIS K. J OHNSQNQ ABBOT AUGUSTUS LOW. Witnesses:
