UNITED STATES ATENT FFICE.
HARRISON-W. BOLENDER, OF FREEPORT, ILLINOIS. I
FARM-GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 593,638, dated November 16, 1897.
Application filed March 5, 1897- Serial No. 625 ,979. (No model.)
ToaZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRISON W. BoLEN 1 out latch or other separate device therefor.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings by means of four figures, of which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate embodying my invention in its preferred form. Fig. 2 isahorizontal section in line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end elevation looking toward the left in Fig. 1; and Fig. iis a view similar to that shown in Fig. 3, except that the gate is shown open instead of closed;
Referring to the drawings, the construction shown therein consists of a gate A, which may be of any preferred form, shutting against a post Band hinged upon a second post 0 in the ordinary manner. The gate when open swings against a post D, upon one side thereof and preferably located several feet distant therefrom to furnish room for the operating device hereinafter described. Upon the gate, at some point between its ends and preferably about a third of the way from the hinged end, is secured an eye (1, in which is linked a rod d, the other end of which is linked in an eye (1 secured in a weighted lever D, one
end of which is pivoted by means of a horizontal pivot d upon a board d secured to the post D at such an angle as to bring it in line with the eye 01 in the gate when the latter is closed. The free end of the leverris provided with a weight 01 The lever D is also provided with a second eye cl, in which is linked a rod E, the other end of which is linked in an eye f, secured to a long lever F, pivoted horizontallyin the post 0 at c and guided vertically in the post D; A second long lever G is pivoted in the post D at d", and the inner end of the lever is connected with the lever F by means of a pivoted link 9. The levers F and G extend upon opposite sides of the gate and are intended for use in opening and closing the same.
Figs. 1, 2, and 3 show the gate in its closed position, the lever Dand the rod dbeing extended substantially in line between the pivot 01 and the eye at, and the weighted end of the lever resting upon the rod 61. When in this position, any force applied to the gate to open it has no effect upon the rod and lever, for
the reason that the force is sustained by the pivot d and has no tendency to raise the lever. To open the gate, either of the levers F G may be pulled downward at its free end, raising the Weighted lever D and throwing the same upward and past avertical position the rod d form a sort of toggle-lever when,
the gate is nearly closed and greatly increase the power of the weight in closing the same; also, the same purchase is obtained in starting the gate from its closed position by means of the levers.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with the post, 0, and'gate, A, hinged thereto, of the link, 01, pivoted to the gate and adapted to swing vertically thereupon, the lever, D, pivoted to the link and to a stationary supportat one side of the gate and arranged to swing about the latter point substantially in a vertical plane passing through the point at which the link is pivoted when the gate is closed, a second link pivoted to the lever, D, and the levers, F, G, pivoted to the link, E, said levers being pivoted to the post-s, O, D, respectively and connected between the same by the link, S, and one of the levers being guided vertically in the opposite post; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, at Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, this 26th day of February, A. D. 1897.
HARRISON W. BOLENDER. \Vitnesses:
W. A. STEVENS, ALEX. GRIER.
