UNITED STATES PATENT WILLIAM GRANT KELLY, or NIAGARA FALLS onnrnn, CANADA.
SNAP-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,023, dated November 2, 1897.
Application filed June 15, 1896. Serial No. 595,641. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,WILLIAn GRANT KELLY, of Niagara Falls Center, in the county of WVeL land, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Snaps, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to snaps and my object is to produce a snap having two hook ends, a single tongue closing both hooks, and a spring engaging with said tongue to close both hooks, said tongue being guided vertically by and rocking upon a stud erected upon said body and passing through a slot in said tongue, whereby either hook can be opened independently of the other, or both hooks can be opened simultaneously. It is constructed as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 is a top plan, of the snap.
A is the body of the snap, being of either sheet metal stamped out or of cast metal and having its ends bent over to form the hooks 2 A post 4: is erected on said body, with or without a head upon its free end, which is inserted through a slot 5 in the tongue 6, both ends of which engage with said hooks. A spring 7, around said post, orof any other suitable form, supports said tongue in its double engagement. It also permits the tongue to be depressed at one end to open the hook 2 or at the other end to open the hook 3, or the entire tongue can be depressed to open both ends simultaneously.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. IA snap comprising a body having hooks on both ends, a tongue provided with a slot, a post having a head and engaging said slot and secured in said body, and a spring engaging with said tongue to hold it normally in engagement with both hooks, and forming its only support, whereby either hook can be opened separately or both can be opened simultaneously.
2. A snap-hook comprising a body consisting of a flat piece of metal without flanges, having its ends bent over inwardly toward each other into a plane, parallel with that of the central portion of said body, atongue consisting of a flat piece of metal having its extremities underlapping the ends of said body, and provided with a central longitudinal slot, a post having a head erected upon said body and passing freely through said slot, and a spring around said post and engaging with and forming the sole means of support of said tOlgllG, holding it normally against said body 60 en s.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this tth day of June, 1896.
NELLIE NOMICE PEw, D. E. KELLY.
