Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL CAESAR, OF LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK.
NEEDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,926, dated November 2, 1897.
Application filed June 14, 1897- Serial No. 640,742. (Model) To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL CAESAR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Long Island City, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Needles, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
[ W This invention relates to needles; and the object thereof is to provide an ordinary nee- Ll die with an eye which is so formed that the thread will notpull out in operating the needle.
"The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of my improved needle, and Fig. 2 a View at right angles thereto with the end thereof in which the eye is formed in section.
The needle in each of the views is shown on an enlarged scale, and in the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a needle 5, which is provided with an I oblong eye 6, and the outer end of the eye of the needle is contraoted, as shown at 7, so as 0 to form a narrow slot 'or portion into which the thread will be wedged in the operation of the needle or in pulling the thread through the cloth or other material, so as to securely hold the thread in said eye and to prevent the 3 5 same from pulling out of orbeing disconnected from the eye of the needle.
The outer end of the eye of the needle is also closed by a narrow wedge-shaped portion 8 and the sides of the needle adjacent there" o are bent inwardly, thereby forming the re- 40' duced portion of the slot, whereby the thread does not enlarge th e h.ole.made.b5tiil fili 9l i le J ,'n th fam'd the inner end wall of the eye of the needle is also preferably beveled at its opposite sides, as shown at 9, and from this construction it is also evident that in drawing the thread into the reduced portion of the eye the side forming the same will yield to the thread and act as a spring-clamp to hold the same therein and will reduce the danger of cutting the thread to a minimum.
My improvement is simple in construction and operation, and by means thereof the thread will be securely held in the eye of the needle at all times, no matter how short the end thereof which passes through the eye is.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- As an improved article of manufacture, a needle provided at one end with a slotted extension, the sides of which are bent inwardly adjacent to the end and connected by a wedge shaped portion whereby an eye is formed having a reduced extension at the outer end, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 11th day of June, 1897.
- EMIL CAESAR.
